Clarence Fountain goes solo!, May 19, 2003
This review is from: Golden Moments in Gospel (Audio CD)
On this cd Clarence Fountain, the lead singer of The Five Blind Boys of Alabama, goes solo and sings without the backing of his fellow members of the five blind boys, and does it well! So this is not a quartet style singing, with fast swinging melodies like we have sometimes heard from the Five Blind Boys but medium tempo and slower tunes with a bluesy feel at times which fits Mr. Clarence's voice well.
Fountain left the Five Blind boys twice but returned each time. He first left in 1969 and toured as a solo act until he returned to the group in 1975 and I assume that these recordings are from that period of time.
I guess that these recordings went quickly out of stock, since I've noticed that only two months later these very same recordings were issued by the same label under a different name and cover: "Don't forget to pray". What's more is that most of the songs have been given different names for those two cd's although the recordings are exactly the same. So the song "Where Jesus is" on this cd becomes "I want to go" on Don't forget to pray, "Only believe" on this disc becomes "All things are possible", "Pray for me" becomes "Don't forget to pray" etc.etc.
So if you're planning to buy this cd, which I highly recommend if you like bluesy, soulful gospel, you actually have two different titles to choose from!
Pick which ever one you like and enjoy!
