" I SOLD MY HEART TO THE JUNKMAN" how can you resist this one?,
This review is from: Golden Philly Classics (Audio CD)
Crazy as the title sounded back in 1962, "I sold my heart to the junkman" was a good size hit,
and I sooo loved to sing along! This 27 track c.d. focuses on only the years from 1962 to 1964. The Blue-Belles had 4 songs make the pop chart during that time, Those are here and there B-sides: 1. "I sold my heart to the junkman" b/w "Itty bitty twist" top 20 hit in 1962. 2. "Down the aisle" b/w "C'est La Vie (so goes life)" top 40 hit in 1963. 3. "You'll never walk alone" b/w "Decatur street" top 40 hit in 1964. 4. "Danny boy" b/w "I beleive" top 100 in 1964. This is the true early 1960s sound of the group. What great voices they have! Raw and powerful! A reflection of the uncomplicated bye gone days. 15 of the 27 tracks are stereo. The "Bluebells" had 8 songs on the pop chart from 1962 to 1975. In 1977 the group disbanded and Patti LaBelle started her solo career. The liner note give two pages of information about the group. All original recordings. Recommended keepsake of the days when rhythm and blues was just plain that - RHYTHM and BLUES!

The Bluebelles sing wonderfully in this CD. I was shocked to find Sarah doing the lead vocals. Patti belts out her soulful renditions or "Where Are You" and "You'll Never Walk Alone" in her sweet, teenage voice. You can sense the future diva that would soon flourish from this little girl.

My first memory of Patti LaBelle is of her (and the Bluebelles) singing "Down The Aisle" in, I believe, 1961. It was in the dark melancholy winter months and evoked the feelings for finding the right person and getting married. (How times change). This package is not one completely of songs that roared to the top of the charts but it is a compilation that shows Ms. Labelle's special abilities in interpreting a song with seemingly heartfelt emotion. With some CDs, you want to hear just the hits and not a bunch of filler tunes; with Patti Labelle, it matters not. In fact this lady has often been deprived of having her solid work go to the top of the charts, but her musical abilities are extraordinary and her work has been consistently above average. You will not be disappointed if you buy this CD for an evening with this gifted talent.
