Book Description

January 1, 1994 9 and up
Bren and Lucy, brother and sister, are playing near their home in the Kootenays one day when they find a golden pine cone. Before they know it they are tumbling into an underwater world, racing across the countryside with a fast team of reindeer, soaring through the air with a flight of Canada geese - and, finally, returning the golden pine cone to its rightful owner.

The Golden Pine Cone has stood the test of time because it is a simple, straightforward adventure which explores the potential magic in everyday things. The characters are ordinary children with courage and compassion; the setting and the mythology are uniquely Canadian.

Suitable for ages 6 and up.

About the Author

Catherine Anthony Clark (1892-1966) was a young child living in England when she first heard about British Columbia from a friend, and began bringing home pamphlets from BC House. Eventually she moved to Canada with her widowed father and her seven siblings, and they settled in Grey Creek, in the Kootenay region of BC's interior. The Golden Pine Cone, published in 1950, was Clark's first novel and remained the most popular and best-loved of all of them. Her other novels are The Sun Horse (winner of the Canadian Association of Children's Librarians bronze medal in 1952), The One-Winged Dragon, The Silver Man, The Diamond Feather and The Hunter and the Medicine Man.

Greta Guzek is a painter currently living on the Sunshine Coast.

This review is from: The Golden Pine Cone (Paperback)
Open your imagination and get swept into the adventure. A brother and sister find a golden pinecone in the woods which enables them to communicate with animals and fairies. Their dog Ooshka becomes their guide as they must return the magical pinecone to the valley of Tekontha. Many adventures come their way. Flavoured with native indian folklore. The author lived in British Columbia and the setting is 1950's west coast Canada. More appropriate for children grade 3+ as some of their adventures may be scary for younger children (i.e. the "Lake Snake Swamp"). Paperback has beautiful new illustrations. Has a "Harry Potter" feel to it. Loved it so much I named my web site after it!
