Editorial Reviews

Review

As a child, I grew up with Golden Records, and still have a cardboard case filled with those shiny black (but most often yellow) 45 and 78 rpm slices of a more innocent time. Founded by award-winning music producer Arthur Shimkin in 1948, Golden Records was one of the first children's record labels in America.

Celebrity Series: The Magic Continues, Volume One, is the first of four CDs that digitally restores the original recordings of the 50?s & 60?s, and updates them with the voices of such contemporary actors as Ed Asner, Susan Sarandon, Alicia Silverstone, Busy Philipps, Cheryl Hines, Didi Conn, and Constance Marie. Classics such as "Rapunzel," "Puss in Boots," "Jack and the Beanstalk," and (my personal favorite) "The Little Engine That Could," are given fresh coats of digital paint. Making the package truly complete is the involvement of award-winning producer Tony Shimkin, son of the late Arthur Shimkin, carrying on his Father's legacy.

For parents of a certain age, hearing the classic background music and even the Golden theme music, will bring a rush of nostalgia. For listeners of any age, hearing actors the caliber of Susan Sarandon bring life to "Jack and the Beanstalk" and Ed Asner put his mark on "The Little Engine That Could" is a delight not-to-be missed. --Lahri Bond - Parents Choice

5.0 out of 5 stars The Return of Golden Records! September 6, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Do you remember the Golden Records that came with Little Golden books? I remember having dozens of Little Golden Books that came with a cassette tapes, ranging from fairy tales to Sesame Street. I even recall listening to a few vinyl records that belonged to my grandma.

Golden Records is the most successful children record label in America. It was created by Arthur Shimkin in 1948. Each record contained an amazing orchestration and popular voice talents. Now, Golden Records is releasing their classic songs and stories onto CDs for a whole new generation, combining some old favorites tunes with new celebrity vocals.

I was recently sent a CD of Volume 1consisting of the amazing celebrity voices of Ed Asner, Alicia Silverstone, Susan Sarandon; Constance Marie, Didi Conn, Cheryl Hines, and Busy Phillips, courtesy of Golden Records in exchange for an honest review.

There are 21 tracks with the classic Golden Theme jumping starting this wonderful CD full of great children songs and stories, such as The Little Engine That Could, Yankee Doodle, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf, Puss in Boots, The Princess and The Pea, Jack and the Beanstalk, Pop Goes the Weasel, Three Billy Goats Gruffs, The Frog Prince, Animal Fair, Hansel & Gretel, The Story of Goldilocks, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Snow White and Rose Red, Cinderella, The Muffin Man, Jack B. Nimble, and See You Next Time, all ending with the See You Next Time message by Alicia Silverstone.

It has been years since I had head the story The Little Engine That Could and I had completely forgotten how the story went. My favorite celebrity voice was Alica Silverstone as she gave great depth to each character in the stories Rapunzel, Three Billy Goats Gruff, and The Story of Goldilocks. I had honestly never heard the story of Snow White and Rose Red (Spoiler: it's not the same Snow from the Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), Jack B. Nimble, and The Princess and The Pea.

With fairy tales being reintroduced as television shows and feature films, children will be wanting to know the original stories, and we all know the Grimm stories can be a little too grim for kids. Thankfully, Golden Records is bringing out these timeless stories and music for you to share with your children.

The few things that caught my attention were:
- children CD!
- packed with 20 classic songs and stories!
- combines the beautifully orchestrated original recordings with the talent of today's biggest and brightest stars!

I often play music and songs in the background while my 3 years old boy do his activities (Lego or pretend play mostly) as we were told that children learned even though they just listen to the sound or songs or music. In fact, my SIL even recommended me to play the National Geography videos or series on the TV and just let my kids listened to it. She said we'll be surprised to know how much our kids can absorb and learned by just listening!

Because of that I went on a search to look for nice, educational and fun songs to play as background music. The song I have on my list is Luther Frank's "Manners Can Be Fun" which I think really helps as I found my boy humming and singing parts of the song back to me! Of course, I also used the opportunity to teach my boy about manners and that it is a fun thing to watch out for our manners too!

So yes, I am so so so happy to be able to review this album as I get to add more songs and wonderful stories to my background music/song album now! Anyway, without further delay, here goes my review...

What a wonderful collection of songs and stories in this album! Some fun and entertaining songs such as "Yankee Doodle (Didi Conn)", "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf (Did Conn)" and "The Muffin Man (Didi Conn)" and "Jack B. Nimble (Ed Asner)" really brings back memories to me! I love the fact that my kids can now enjoy listening to these timeless classics!

As for stories, I really love listening to "Cinderella (Busy Philipps)", it just reminds me of the giant Disney story book I used to have when I was a little girl. I also used the opportunity in the "The Story of Goldilocks (Alicia Silverstone)" to teach my 3 years old boy manners, that we have to ask permission before using other people's things/properties.

Some of the celebrities' voices are so so convincing and soothing to listen to! I never expected Alicia Silverstone's voice could be so captivating! And Susan Sarandon's voice is truly charming and one of a kind! I also find myself dreaming while I listened to Ed Asner's voice in "The Little Engine That Could".

Not only is this album truly fun and entertaining, it also open up my eyes and I learned some new things too! To be honest, until I listened to the "Snow White And Rose Red (Cheryl Hines)" I did not know there is a Rose Red character!

To sum up my review, this album is a must to have! Seriously, you really really REALLY need to get yourself a copy of the album NOW NOW NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Stories and Songs September 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I was sent this CD for review and I was super excited. This brought me back to my childhood. I was a child born in the 70's, but my sisters were born in the 50's, so I am guessing we still had their records laying around for me to enjoy. I had so many favorites as a child and I enjoyed listening to them all again as an adult. The kids became interested in the stories and wondered what I was listening to. It has been relaxing to listen to them in the background throughout the day. I really loved Alicia Silverstone's reading of Rapunzel and Constance Marie's reading of Hansel and Gretel. I also plan to use the songs mixed throughout the CD at our monthly storytime. The kids will love to dance along to Yankee Doodle, Animal Fair, and Pop Goes the Weasel.

These CD's would make an excellent stocking stuffer or gift for any child on your list. I know I will be giving them out as gifts this year. The stories are timeless and will encourage a love of reading and storytelling in your children.
