Teach Your Children Well

Timely and timeless, this essential handbook offers thoughtful, much-needed advice to both new and experienced parents who want to raise decent, ethical children in today's complicated world. With warmth and gentleness, Wayne Dosick identifies the standards of ethical behavior that define right from wrong: respect, honesty, fairness, responsibility, compassion, gratitude, friendship, peace, maturity, faith. Based on his personal and professional experience, Rabbi Dosick demonstrates how to instill these basic values in children from tots to teens using simple, everyday methods. From frank talks to creating new traditions at home, playing games to telling stories, he shows parents how to help their children develop a strong moral character that will guide them throughout their lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

This book is what William Bennett's The Book of Virtues should have been and wasn't. Containing parables and stories to ponder and discuss, Golden Rules leads adults gracefully through the prayers and simple exercises that can convey to children the 10 values of respect, honesty, fairness, responsibility, compassion, gratitude, friendship, peace, maturity and faith. In doing so, Dosick-a rabbi, a father and author of The Business Bible-has created a concise book that, with age- and category-specific questions for different groups, is well-conceived and easy to use.

From Library Journal

This guidebook for teaching the nondenominational moral values needed by children proclaims that parents are responsible for imparting an ethical value system to their offspring. Dosick, a.k.a. the "video rabbi" and adjunct professor at the University of San Diego, argues that a recommitment to basic human values is needed. He posits his ten golden rules and states that the ultimate moral courage is to say no to deviations from the standards that have been taught. Included are 50 "lumies"-helpful suggestions and action-oriented activities for teaching ethical behavior to children. At the end of each chapter are age-graded questions for discussion and a nonsectarian prayer to recite. A light style and frequent anecdotes keep the presentation interesting and accessible. This title complements Dosick's The Business Bible: Ten Commandments for Creating an Ethical Workplace (HarperBusiness, 1994). Recommended for public libraries that need an effective title on moral child rearing.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book that teaches values using real-life examples., August 4, 1998
By A Customer
The title caught my attention but the comment that it was "everything William Bennett's book should have been and wasn't" was what sparked the interest to buy it. And I must say that our family agrees with that comment. Unlike Bennetts' book, this book is one that gives examples of values and situations in which young and old alike find themselves. Our family uses this book, one chapter a night, to read, discuss and learn each of the values. It is a great tool to use with our twin eight-year olds. The way we utilize it works for us and truly makes lasting impressions on our children. We limit the sessions to weekly or we run out of chapters in two weeks. We go back and revisit certain chapters if situations warrant. A great book that teaches values by real-life examples. We reccommend it for any family with children.

This is an amazing book for children of all ages! We all need to be reminded of these ethical values and Rabbi Dosick gives hundreds of parables which come to mind each day as we do our daily duties. Along with the parables, each chapter ends with a story to read with your children and age appropriate questions for discussion. My children love listening to the parables and my six year old son remembers them and talks to me about them when he see's their application in his little life. I highly recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden Rules: The Ten Ethical Values Parents Teach, March 29, 2000
This review is from: Golden Rules: The Ten Ethical Values Parents Need to Teach Their Children (Mass Market Paperback)
Wayne Dosick has provided a very important work for helping parents to key in on important issues for child rearing. Many books identify the contributors of children's moral problems but Dosick tells us what to do about these problems. He answers important questions about the importance of the family and a parents role in childrearing. This is an important work. I work with children daily that I only wish the parents would have followed a few of the important values Dosick has provided. My recommendation is that parents with young children should read this book before problems begin. It is well worth your time and effort.
