This review is from: The golden shadow
This book has the prose that Garfield always delivers, though I'm uncertain about Blishen's contribution and certainly don't want to slight the co-author. But, Garfield in "God Beneath The Sea" captivated me with its retelling of the Greek legend of Hephaestus, while weaving in many other characters from classical myth. Particularly entrancing was Hermes, a god in "Sea" and also in "Shadow," truly one of the most 'human' of the Greek pantheon. The protagonist in "Shadow" is a standin for Homer, or maybe it /is/ Homer, I don't know, but his all-too-human yearning to see an actual god is understandable and at the end of the book, attained. This really deserves its five-star rating for the glory of its prose.
