Editorial Reviews

From the Author

As a writer, nothing is more gratifying than the reviews and comments I receive on my books. As one reader wrote from my website: "I really like a good underdog story and Roxanne's character is so likable and her challenges so relatable, I found myself really invested in her. This is smart writing with plenty of witty dialog and an intelligent storyline which gives this book a lot of heart and makes for a great read." If you're in the mood for a story with a feisty protagonist determined to change her life, a mountain of obstacles and a slew of vivid characters, check out Golden State. I hope you find it as fun to read as it was to write.

From the Back Cover

Golden State is a potpourri of personalities--imperious bosses, screwy coworkers, steadfast friends, assorted male admirers, and a family full of over-educated, underachieving kooks. Roxanne deals with them all in her indomitable fashion, never giving up or compromising who she is or who she wants to become.

More About the Author

Cynthia Hamilton has recently embarked on a mystery series and has become hooked on working in this genre. The author does extensive research for all her books and her latest are no exception. To gear up for "Spouse Trap", the first book in the series, she took a detective course and spent countless hours investigating Guam, "virtually" living there so she could navigate her protagonist through a quickie divorce, with a little mayhem on the side.

"Spouse Trap," set in her hometown of Santa Barbara, CA, is the prequel to the series. It tells the story of how Madeline Ridley becomes Madeline Dawkins, and the dual careers she forges after going to hell and back. It was released in February 2013 and has received very enthusiastic feedback.

Because of what she put her heroine through in the first installment, the author realized Madeline needed to have martial arts training in the subsequent books. To that end, she has taken up karate, a discipline she has fallen in love with - so much so, she incorporated her instructor into her latest book.

The author's other works include "A High Price to Pay," "Lucky at Love," "Alligators in the Trees," "Golden State," and her first non-fiction "Once Upon a Lyme..." which chronicles the onset of a mysterious illness and the unexpected dividend of becoming a writer. Roxanne Platt has an attitude problem. She'll admit that. But she also has a couple of steadfast friends, several admirers, a seven year old son who keeps her off balance, a family of oddball intellectuals, egocentric employers, a self-absorbed ex-husband, and a supporting cast of many other vividly drawn characters. They are all so believably portrayed, I felt like I was reading about people I'd actually met.

The plot is full of pitfalls and triumphs as Roxanne tries to dig herself out of a dead-end life and prove to herself and all the naysayers that she's capable of anything if she wants it badly enough. She's the perfect anti-heroine turned super heroine. She and Andrea made me laugh out loud. I don't want to spoil anything, but Roxanne's adventures in the real estate world were so accurate and hilarious, I have to wonder at the author's background.

When my friend sent this ebook to me, I thought I was in for pretty light fare; a few compromising situations, some wistful musings, but not something that was so cleverly written. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who's ever felt like life was against them, or anyone who enjoys a spirited, rollicking tale.

Roxanne had me cheering her on from the first page! For me, thats what counts; I need to be able to relate to and care about the protagonist. You quickly see she is not what she appears to be, your average girl, stuck in a dead end job. She has an edge and a wit that has kept her spirit intact throughout her challenges as a single mom (something I personally can relate to). She digs deep to find her strengths and ingenuity to recreate herself and make a better life for herself and her son. The journey is not an easy one. However, she manages to keep her humor with the help of her best friend Andrea as she ventures into unchartered territory and the cutthroat world of selling real estate. I really love this book. It will not disappoint!

I really enjoyed reading Golden State! The premise was light but intriguing - a thirty-something single mom who's desperate to stop checking groceries for a living. But the story was about so much more than just finding a better job - it was about personal transformation, against all odds - and all odd balls! The writing sweeps you straight into action, and there's never a dull moment as Roxanne battles egomaniacal bosses, her quirky family and questionable cohorts. The dialog is spirited and the situations Roxanne gets herself into are hilarious. But underneath it all is the message that we're capable of more than we realize. Roxanne is a modern-day heroine, and Golden State is an anthem for really living as opposed to just surviving. This is a very good read!

I kept at the book until I reached 3/4 of it and then just had to stop. I kept waiting for the story to open up. I thought something good was finally going to happen. I found the book to have an enormous amount of small idel chit chat about nothing...on and on and on. In between there was a good story, I think but it was so frustrating waiting and skipping through all the small talk. I just couldn't do it anymore. Too bad. I really hoped it would have taken off at some point.

Not every book is enjoyed by every person. I did read the first few chapters but had to put it down. Juvenile main character.

I liked Roxanne and her struggle to make a better life for herself and her son after she got fired from her thankless cashiers job. Her ex- husband was newly married and was making lots of money now that he started his own IT company. How could her life get any more depressing? She needed a change and fast. After taking a online realtor study course she passed her test and set out to make a name for herself. This was interesting till about halfway and it seems to get bogged down with spending money she doesn't have and drinking till she does things she should be ashamed of. There was so much effort placed in her off hours life and not much thought in leading up to the ending which seemed rushed. She sold a property no one else could sell, the end. I felt like it needed more story and less drinking wine, coffee, tea, whatever.

At first I thought I wasn't going to and the few curse words I thought is this how it's going to be the whole time? But something kept me reading and it turned out to be a pretty good book! I love the kid, didnt like ex-husband but he did come through in a pinch so that redeemed him a little. I wish she had been more lucky in love. But I like the perseverance and the staying the course and of course the happy ending!

A great novel about a woman who is at a crossroads in her life. Unhappy with her life at work and with her sadistic boss she decides to try her hand at real estate at about the worst time in the world to do it. The book was filled with a lot of humorous and heart. I really liked the fellow occupants of one of the houses she tries to sell. I definitely did end up caring about the journey she was making.
