Book Description

November 1993
A portrait of the life and death of Brian Jones, the founder of The Rolling Stones, rejects traditional stereotypes of an addicted and womanizing rock star for the often startling confidences of those who knew him best. National ad/promo.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Hyperbolic even by rock bio standards, Jackson's investigation of Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones is hard to take seriously. The first evidence that much of the story is missing comes when the acknowledgements fail to name any of Jones's bandmates--his fellow Stones show up only occasionally in material culled from other sources. This chronicle considers the band members superflous to Jones, whose looks, musical ability and fashion sense inspire idolatry ("he experimented with silks, satins, and acres of velvet, proving by bold example that a man could wear these sensual fabrics . . .and retain every ounce of his masculinity"). Jackson, a Scots writer, also attributes to Jones other qualities, claiming without much evidence that the "Satisfaction" riff usually credited to Keith Richards was actually created by Jones. On the subject of Jones's drowning--in his pool around midnight between July 2 and 3, 1969--Jackson simply restates that the circumstances surrounding his death cannot be corroborated, thus leaving the truth still shadowy. From Library Journal

As founder of the Rolling Stones, Jones was a charismatic performer and perhaps the group's best musician. Although the author's assertion in the preface that "Arguably Brian Jones was the most exciting man of one of the most exciting decades of living memory" overstates Jones's impact on the 1960s, he was certainly an influential innovator in popular music. When his relationship with other members of the band deteriorated and he was unable to tour abroad because of convictions for drug use, Jones quit the band in 1969. His death by drowning in his swimming pool later that year has never been adequately explained. This book offers a more thorough investigation of Jones's life and the events surrounding his death than Mandy Aftel's Death of a Rolling Stone: The Brian Jones Story ( LJ 9/1/82). Recommended for larger public libraries.

There are many opinions and contradicting 'first hand accounts' about Brian Jones life and death. The only choice a serious fan has is to compare and contrast a good sample of the books available. While Bill Wyman's book may be more detailed, 'Golden Stone' is many steps above the average teeny-bopper fare available on Jones, and is a necessary additon for any real B.J. enthusiast.

Very interesting book on the life and mysterious death of Brian Jones.

Details of his sons is provided as well as insight into Brian's parents (who thought no girl was good enough).

As the very intelligent son with a very promising future, the story of his rejection of school and authority this book details the hardships of his home life and his parents who were expecting a great academic career for their son.

When Brian does begin playing blues in London, his parent are surprisingly supportive because Brian seemed to be a loner and not one to be before an audience.

It looks upon his life with compassion, and that is why I love this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about this fascinating and persecuted genius who shaped the best ,IMO, recordings of the Stones career. I'm glad I got to know him a little better through this!
