Distilled nostalgia in musical form. Much like Nicolaus' (and Daniel Rossen's) earlier album In Ear Park, this album starts out (and stays) strong. Favorite album of the year so far.

I really loved Department of Eagles "In Ear Park," so I had to get this one b/c of Fred Nicolaus, and I am glad I did!

It had the catchy surreal music that I love and it does not disappoint. Better than expected.

Get this album. One of my favorites thus far for the year.

this album doesn't just have 10 strong songs. it has 10 strong songs backed by amazing instrumental arrangements that rival or surpass anything fred nicolaus did with the department of eagles project. fantastic cuts on here, it's definitely a must-buy regardless of whether you're familiar with anything else nicolaus has worked on (but especially if you are a fan of that grizzly bear / department of eagles sound).

When Fred Nicolaus was in college, he started a little band called Department of Eagles with his roommate. The band was a moderate success, and while they're still nominally `active', they haven't released a proper album since 2008's In Ear Park. In the interim, Nicolaus has seen a lot of change - he's moved around New York City, gone bankrupt, traveled to Europe to trace his ancestry, and lost 40 pounds somehow through it all. Oh, and he's kind of been in the shadow of his aforementioned roommate and his band as well (but we'll get to that in just a moment). All of these things provide Nicolaus with plenty of emotional fodder to get through on his self titled debut as Golden Suits. While playing Department of Eagles, Nicolaus was responsible for some of the poppier, friendly sounds of their records, and as you might expect, that surfaces here on Golden Suits too.

All right, so back to the whole roommate thing. The other half of Department of Eagles is Daniel Rossen. Of Grizzly Bear. Grizzly Bear is one of the best rock bands on the scene now, and they're one of the few bands out there to be creatively accomplished and commercially viable. Rossen and Nicolaus got their start with Department of Eagles, and from there, Rossen has been pretty successful as a songwriter, but Nicolaus has (purposefully or not) been mostly pretty quiet with his musical output. As his first solo statement, Golden Suits shares a lot of the same musical space as Department of Eagles and Grizzly Bear, and understandably so. The issue is that this material just isn't as up to snuff as these other acts. I'm sure that no one wants to compare Nicolaus to Rossen, but their similar sounds make it quite difficult.

Debut release out of Brooklyn from Fred Nicolaus of the band Department of Eagles--classic,
gently soaring pop songs; flourished with a subtly twisted peculiarity and sung with a strangely
playful melancholy. Guest appearance from members of Grizzly Bear. Shades of Jens Lekman,
Peter Gabriel, Paul McCartney, Randy Newman, Case Studies, Atlas Sound & Grizzly Bear.
