Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This quiet, gentle book from Amish author Bender (A Treasured Friendship, Herald, 1996) ends a five-volume set chronicling the life of Miriam, an Amish farmwife. In diary format, Miriam discusses her family and friends, including a visiting student from Germany who enlivens the quiet Amish community with her cheerful attitude and her romantic adventures. A child in Miriam's care is injured in an accident, leading to accusations of child abuse. Through it all, Miriam holds on to a faith in God that is tested but never broken. Extremely well written and a joy to read, with many fascinating details of Amish life, this superior book deserves a place in all libraries.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed in racist tone, September 17, 2007

I was very happy with the entire series until the last 30 pages of book 5 where an African character is introduced. Ms. Bender doesn't even try to hide the prejudicial attitude in her treatment of this character. When asked by family friend Martha if the church would allow a member of another race, the narrator's husband, Nate responds " Of course not." The possibility of an interracial marriage was horrifying to the narrator and the Amish church in this book. How disappointing! Perhaps Ms. Bender doesn't expect or care that African Americans might be a part of her readership.
