Disappointed in racist tone,
By Auntie K (Glassboro, NJ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Golden Sunbeam (Miriam's Journal #5) (Paperback)
I was very happy with the entire series until the last 30 pages of book 5 where an African character is introduced. Ms. Bender doesn't even try to hide the prejudicial attitude in her treatment of this character. When asked by family friend Martha if the church would allow a member of another race, the narrator's husband, Nate responds " Of course not." The possibility of an interracial marriage was horrifying to the narrator and the Amish church in this book. How disappointing! Perhaps Ms. Bender doesn't expect or care that African Americans might be a part of her readership.
