A Moment in Time, A Moment to Be Remembered for as Long as Golf is Played, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Golden Twilight (Hardcover)
Everything Jack Nicklaus did in his competitive career was done the right way.
And this book is done the right way, too.
A story of Jack's last year of competition in all four majors, it gives keen, good and meaningful insight into Nicklaus and the game of golf.
The chapter on Jack's final PGA is especially meaningful. The end of it should be required reading for all who love golf.
Jack Nicklaus, the greatest golfer of the 20th Century, and Tiger Woods, the greatest golfer of the 21st Century are standing on the 18th tee at Valhalla. They, and all the world, knew that this was most likely Jack's final hole in PGA Competition. That he was paired with Tiger made it a special moment in golf history, legend and lore. Golf has always had a great feeling for tradition, and this was tradition at its best. Tiger vs. Nicklaus, the old Bear adn the young Tiger for the last time on the last hole, truly an appropriate stage for the golden twlight.
As they stood on the tee of the par-five 18th, Tiger, the greatest golfer of the 21st Century, looked at Nicklaus, greatest golfer of the 20th century, and said, "It's been an honor and a pleasure playing with you, Jack. Let's finish it off right..." To which Nicklaus replied, "Let's do it...."
Both men birdied the hole and the torch was passed, Nicklaus fading into the twlight, Tiger standing alone in the the bright light of fame, success, glory and grandeur. The past belonged to Jack, the future belonged to Tiger. It was memorable to watch on TV, and it was memorable to read about, again and again, in this fine work.
There's a plaque on the 18th tee at Valhalla in Louisville describing the day and the moment. To stand on that tee, where those two men stood on that day,to read what happened there,is truly a memorable and emotional experience---even if you do duck-hook your drive to the left!!!

A fine exit, August 16, 2001

This book is the story of the Jack Nicklaus's farewell tour of the 4 majors. After hip replacement surgery, Nicklaus decided that 2000 would be the last year he would attempt to play in all 4 of professional golf's major championships. In a way, the timing worked out great. He was not normally exempt for the U.S. Open, and he assumed that 2000 would be the last year he would be granted a special exemption to play. I guess I am of the age that I really don't quite remember him when he was at his dominant peak of golf in the 70's. I just remember his great wins at the U.S. Open and at the Masters when most people had written him off as being too old. So this book is confirmation of his role as probably the greatest golfer of the 20th century, but is is sort of sad at the same time that it isn't until the age of 60 (!) that Nicklaus has to admit to giving into father time. He admits that he can't apply his ferocious will to get the ball in the hole when he wants to anymore. If you are a fan of Jack or of golf in general, this book is highly recommended
