5.0 out of 5 stars I like it better than Battlefield 3... November 1, 2011

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I am thoroughly enjoying Goldeneye Reloaded--even more so than I did Battlefield 3. Granted, I'm much more of a campaign player as opposed to a Multiplayer fan. I don't know about you guys, but Goldeneye 64 was one of the best games of all time when it was released. I'm not much of a Bond fan, but I AM a fan of a quality FPS. This game has good graphics, solid voice acting, a modernized, coherent story (featuring Russians, of course), and a nostalgic feel. The controls are tight and mostly responsive and the guns are meaty and fun to shoot. The AI is inconsistent (dumb at times, smart at others), and I've seen better visuals, but nonetheless, this is a high quality, worthy remake of a remake of a game which was based upon a previously-released movie.

For some reason, it seems that this game isn't making much of a splash in terms of sales or popularity, which is a shame. I suppose we could attribute that partially to last week's release of Battlefield 3 and this week's release of Uncharted 3. Battlefield 3 is a quality game for shooter fans, no doubt, but I appreciate the fact that Goldeneye: Reloaded has a lengthier campaign with no cheap deaths. I sincerely hope this game doesn't get lost in the shuffle. I haven't dabbled into Multiplayer much but from what I can tell it has a good variety of maps with some nice unlockables. Obviously, the Mutiplayer component isn't as comprehensive as that in a game like Battlefield 3, but there are some Multiplayer modes that you haven't played to death in other games, some of which seem to be exclusive to this game entirely--i.e. Golden Gun and Heroes mode. If you're a Multiplayer fan, I think there is some merit in this title in that you will have some exciting game types other than the obligatory Team Deathmatch and Free for All. Classic Bond villains also make appearances in MP, which is a nice little touch for all of you Bond historians. (I ain't one.) Four-player split-screen can be played two ways: locally or online, the former's inclusion being somewhat tributary to the N64 classic. MI6 ops is a new gameplay mode which is very much comparable to "Spec Ops" in MW2, minus the ability to play with a friend. These side missions supplement the main action provided by Goldeneye's campaign and the Multiplayer action. And for all you fellow Campaign players, I have some good news: unless your a beast, after seven hours of gameplay, you'll still probably have a few missions left to complete!

It's my understanding that this game was originally released on the Wii about a year ago. I don't own a Wii, so I can't compare this version to that one. But if you have a PS3 or an Xbox 360, or if you are doing Holiday shopping for your household shooter fan, I highly recommend this game even for those who care little for the Bond franchise in general. For parents, you may be pleased to learn that this game features less vulgar language, although it does have the intense action sequences that us shooter fans demand. If you're not old enough to buy M-rated games, you can't go wrong with this title. I would at least recommend this game as a rental. Keep in mind that, because of its Teen rating, the action isn't quite as brutal as you may have come to expect. For me, Goldeneye 007: Reloaded was worth the price of admission.

Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
I spent countless hours of my adolescent years playing Goldeneye 64 in my friend's basement after school and have warm and fond memories of those times. Being that it was one of the games that brought me the most joy from the N64/PS1 period, I was ecstatic when I heard Goldeneye was to be remade for the Wii in 2010. I bought the game for Wii, and although it didn't quite hold up to it's HD shooter counterparts on the PS3 and Xbox 360, it was a fun and well-done shooter for the Wii. The multiplayer felt a bit rough around the edges, but the single-player was fun and one of the best Wii games of 2010.

That said, this is a review of the newly released "Reloaded" version that I thought I'd pick up for the PS3, specifically with those of us who have also played the Wii version in mind. Reloaded is certainly superior to the Wii version in every way. The graphics have been cleaned up and the controls feel more precise. That said, don't expect graphics to be on par with Uncharted 3 or the multiplayer to among the ranks of a Call of Duty experience. Is it good? Yes. Is it worth $60? Certainly not.

One element of the Wii version that I found refreshing and fun was that Goldeneye offers the option of stealth in a FPS market that is overridden with games where you're constantly placed in high-octane war-zones where you're constantly firing rounds from a machine gun. I played Black Ops and MW2's campaign and found both fairly boring simply because there was little variety. In Goldeneye, it's often best (and most enjoyable) to just use your silenced pistol and take down baddies without setting off alarms and calling in waves of reinforcements. In short, the campaign is certainly worth playing.

Now for the bad: After playing several hours of multiplayer, I can tell you that it is severely lacking. Although there are many game options, the controls feel imprecise and loose, but that could also be due to the constant lag that plagues many of the matches. That, of course, is if you get into a game. Admittedly, my experience has been within the first week of the game's release, but it often took me several tries to even get into a game, which was followed by a long wait to get enough players in the lobby. These problems will likely be fixed in an upcoming patch, but they should have been ironed out before the game's release. All in all, the multiplayer was not what I was hoping for, and unfortunately, will not be a viable alternative to Call of Duty.

In addition to expanded graphics and multiplayer, Reloaded gets a new "MI:6 Ops" feature. I really enjoyed this addition, but it's basically the same as "Spec Ops" from Modern Warfare 2. A nice add-on, but not worth the price of a new game.

In conclusion, this is a certainly a fun shooter ported to the HD systems. It's worth playing if you didn't try the Wii version, but the re-release just doesn't justify the $60 price tag. If you're interested, try renting it from Redbox ($2 a day) or wait until the new year, when it's price will surely be cut (See: Bloodstone). If you did play the Wii version, there's not much to see here.

Pros:
+ Fun single-player gameplay with heavy emphasis on stealth
+ MI:6 Ops give depth to an already lengthily campaign mode
+ Trophy support, if you care about that

Cons:
+ Multiplayer is laggy, has connection issues and controls are imprecise
+ Graphics are only a minor upgrade from Wii and certainly not on par with today's first-person shooters

5.0 out of 5 stars ....I'm not into video games.... November 20, 2011
Platform for Display:PLAYSTATION 3|Edition:Standard
Let me preface this by saying that while I own a Xbox 360, I am not a gamer. My stash of games consists the Lego games and Orange Box. I once (a long time ago) played Max Payne on the PC the whole way through. But after renting Reloaded from RedBox two weekends in a row, Amazon's lightening deal ($25 off)convinced me to buy it. If you like James Bond, Mission Impossible, and the Bourne trilogy movies....you'll be entertained by this game. A great soundtrack, great graphics, and it makes me feel like I am actually SKILLED at playing a video game. I'm looking forward to getting through the game at different skill levels as well as taking the M16 challenges. Personally, I appreciate that there are no zombies, aliens or spaceships, and that most of the game takes place in broad daylight in recognizable surroundings. I also appreciate that when an enemy expires, they simply evaporate and that there is not a lot of blood and hoopla. In fact, the only blood you see is when you get "killed in action". And I have experienced that a lot. So why am I giving this 5 stars? Because of it's ability to keep even a non-gamer captivated and entertained.

Shooter, adventure, or both?
Both. The game is really really good, and is a re-imagining of the classic N64 game, so don´t try to compare this with the classic because this is a total new thing. The graphics are not cutting-edge, but who cares really? Give it a shoot, good game.
