Possibly THE best neo-punk album of the 90s,
By sc_demandred (Irvine, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Goldfinger (Audio CD)
Goldfinger exploded onto a 1996 music scene that was glutted with neo-punk bands trying to soak up the success achieved by Green Day and the Offspring. On the surface, Goldfinger appeared another cutesy-pop-punk band (a la Blink 182), but the deeper one listens to their self-titled debut, the more their talent and worth shines through. The single "Here in Your Bedroom" seemed on the surface to be a silly song about sex, but the MTV crowd may have missed the lyrics that spoke of insecurities and fear of intimacy. The whole album is laced with self-doubt and pain. While expressed in a major key with happy-sounding vocals, most of the songs on "Goldfinger" are raw, simple assesments of failed relationships, anxiety in everyday life and the difficulty of staying afloat. I love this album. I will sing myself hoarse listening to it, because it's just so damn much fun. There's not a song on here that I don't like, from the reggae beats of "King for a Day" to the supercharged catharsis of "The City With Two Faces", all these songs are short, sharp, and full of musical punch. My favorites are "Miles Away" (one of the world's best love songs), "Anxiety", "Anything", "Mable" and "Answers." They aren't as political as Rancid, but Goldfinger has the same relentless energy that blasts through in their music. This album is raucous, rocking, and wonderful; you have to check it out at least once.

a great ska/punk CD,

This is a great CD for anyone who likes ska, punk, reggae, and a touch of alternative. It's an amazing album. Less Than Jake is very similar to Goldfinger, but they have more brass. My favorite tracks are 2, 3, 5, 6 (I see a mix of blink 182 and Social Distortion in this one), 7, 8, 9 (my favorite song on the CD), 11, 14, and 16 (a bonus track not listed here). So get this CD if you like ska, punk, or anything.

Goldfinger's best album,

Goldfinger's self-titlted album is near-perfect. Without a doubt, one of the catchiest punk albums I've ever heard and maybe Goldfinger's best album-to-date (although Stomping Ground is pretty damn close). This is a fun and fast cd, perfect for a drive to the beach with the top rolled down. These songs will stick in your head for a long ass time. Two favorite songs on the album: "Here in Your Bedroom" and "Nothing to Prove". But there is not one song on the cd that is not worthy of being a hit. The cd opens with a bang and never lets up. It has a great mix of pop-punk, ska, and even a hardcore song. Go pick up this cd right now.

nothing to prove,

A good album is hard to come by these days. There are too many bands and albums out there-- and no one could possibly have enough time to hear all of them. But, Goldfinger's self-titled debut album is definately one to hear. It hits the spot right away. Songs like "Anxiety," "Anything," and "Answers" just make this album totally worth while to listen to. Also, besides being Goldfinger's first album, "Goldfinger" is also thier best ( not to say that "Hang-ups" and "Stomping Ground" aren't also great albums). However, "Goldfinger" is just an awesome consolidation of rip- roaring punk rock and ska. Anyway, anyone whose reading this right now probably isn't really into Goldfinger-- because if you like Goldfinger, you don't need to seek my praise (sorry, I don't mean to sound so judgmental). Hence, I suggest you grab your's or someone else's credit card and buy this album. Don't squander all your cash-- appropriate some of your drug money for buying something cool like "Goldfinger,"... then do what you want.

This cd is pure true Goldfinger. My friends always put this cd on when we're hanging out with a bunch of people just because it is a good band for a group of people who like all different kinds of music. Everyone can agree on it...and it's great party music to...you put it in and everyone gets super into it and start jumping around. If you're in a bad mood and you put this cd in you can't help but feel better! Every song on this cd is so good-you don't have to flip through songs...you can just listen to it straight through! And as an extra bonus there are many humorus skits, and a lot of the songs have very humorus lyrics that will keep you rolling on the floor for minutes!

I feel many have shortchanged Goldfinger on this impressive debute album. Friends, this sweet, sweet punk/ska outfit isnt merely a collection of pop tunes that jingle with catchy lyrics and chink with well-timed melodies. No, this is a serious contender for a band that could redefine the way we look at ska. With john feldmann's emphatic vocals and a blazing drummer, Goldfinger had all the right ingrediants for success, of which they have acheived in this effort. Goldfinger was in fact the first band I ever heard with trace elements of both punk and ska in them, and from the onset I was enthralled. Trust me, if you're curious as to what all the hubub is about, check this band out, and their second effort, hang ups, which is equally as impressive. Be prepared, your going to be hearing about this band for some time. This is no one hit wonder. This is the real deal

No Doubt the Best Goldfinger Album!,

I don't know why everyone thinks hang-up's is so much better than this. Just listen to the samples for Here in Your Bedroom, Anxiety, Anything, and Mable. I've heard every Goldfinger album from beginning to end and this one shows the most. It's energetic, catchy, and has a mix of songs from both punk and ska. If you're looking to buy a Goldfinger album, try this one first!

After hearing Goldfinger's song Vintage Queen on the American Pie soundtrack, I decided that I had to have one of their CD's. I bought this one and liked it so much, I bought Hang-Ups soon after. I'd have to say that I like Hang-Ups a little better, but this one is near-perfect. Mable is definately my favorite song on the album. It's hilarious. My other favorites are Pictures and Answers but the whole CD is great. If this is your first Goldfinger album and you're into ska, buy Hang-Ups first, but if you mostly like punk, buy the debut.
