Great, clever, wistful album, May 24, 2007
This review is from: Goldfish Don't Talk Back (Audio CD)
Brenda Kahn is probably tired of her 1st album being praised as her best, but it is -- her lyrics are brilliant, her voice has a great emotional range. I could quote from every song, but look at this line from "Coal Train Blues":
"I know a girl, she got a hat for every thought in her head"
--Great line, we all feel like we've known this girl too; but Kahn's not finished:
"She got three hats: John, Joe, and Fred."
This in a wistful, can't-love-men-can't-shoot-them song. But it's not all laughs -- "If Red Were Blue" and "Eulogy for My Next Lover" are sad, wonderful songs.
Some of the allusions are dated -- PMRC? Billy Joel memorized an encyclopedia? -- but all of the songs hold up well. I have been listening to this album for 10 years and still love it.
