Book Description

9 and up4 and up

The Hare family—Papa, Mama, and Little Baby Hare—are enjoying a peaceful day in their rabbit hole until they hear a big THUMP outside their door. The thump is Goldilocks herself, who has fallen down the rabbit hole after being chased by the Three Bears.

(I think you know why those bears were chasing her.)

The Hare family is happy to help the girl, who has hurt her foot. But as you might imagine, Goldie is not a very good houseguest. She is tough to please, since every chair is too hard, too soft, or otherwise not just right.

(If you were the Hares, you might agree that Goldilocks is loud, obnoxious, and demanding.)

But when Goldie is finally comfy-cozy in the Hares’ rabbit hole, how are they ever going to get her to leave?

Margie Palatini and Jack E. Davis bring a hilarious, just-right twist to the nursery classic.

From Booklist

Palatini, imagining what might have happened to Goldilocks following her bear adventure, suggests that she tripped into a rabbit hole, injuring her foot. The three Hares (Papa, Mama, and Baby, aka Bunny) try to be hospitable, but the obstreperous Goldie ensconces herself on their sofa, demanding pillows, blankets, food, and entertainment. (Bunny is instructed to stand, ears just so, for better television reception.) The Hares try to dislodge her (serving veggie snacks and summoning a skunk) to no avail until Bunny speed-dials the Bears. Davis’ hilarious, cartoon-style art portrays Goldie at her obnoxious best—screaming, drooling, and sneezing on everyone—and the ending (a surprise visit from another blond, seeking a white rabbit) prompts Papa to action. A few jokes seem geared more to adults than kids (“Da Bears” and “Toss me some arugula!”), but any child who is familiar with the original will appreciate this send-up. Perfect for story hours or lap-sits, this can be shared with fans of Mary Jane Auch’s poultry series (Peeping Beauty, 1993). Preschool-Grade 2. --Kay Weisman --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun and perfect for reading aloud, June 5, 2011
My six-year-old daughter had a lot of fun with this book. We took on the roles of the hares and Goldilocks (I voiced the hares, and she voiced Goldie) and this made it an engaging and fun activity. The story takes off from when Goldie flees the three bears. She accidentally trips and falls down a rabbit hole, surprising a family of hares (mom, dad, and youngster).

Part of the fun here is in reading about the methods employed by the disgruntled hares to get rid of Goldie, who is described as "the big little girl". This is a great book for reading aloud to young children, and also in taking turns voicing the various parts. There's a surprise at the end of the book involving another beloved character from children's literature, and we're looking forward to more offerings by this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars FUN take on fairytale, March 15, 2011
I bought this book for 2 reasons. First- for the author, and second- I like fractured fairytales. As a school librarian, I am always looking for funny retellings or takes on well known fairytales. This one the kids really enjoyed. Even though the title is about Goldilocks, there is another surprise character that makes a visit at the end. If you are a fan of Margie Palatini books, this books is a must read. I know I have added this one to my collection.
