Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-A bear lost in the city tries out the porridge and the chairs in an empty apartment. When the owner turns out to be an all-grown-up Goldilocks, the two stories, old and new, come together in a comic fanfare. Retro-modern ink and watercolor art adds fun details.α(c) Copyright 2013. From Booklist

With lots of wordplay and wry, lively pictures, this fractured fairy tale is also a hilarious sequel to the Goldilocks story. Of course, the parody is for older readers, but even young preschoolers will get some of the twists and turns on the story they know, and they will love the mayhem caused by a big, klutzy creature. A bear gets lost in the city, and, disoriented by the bright lights and terrible racket, he takes shelter in an apartment in Snooty Towers. No one is home. He tries the food: too soggy, too crunchy. He wants porridge, but he settles for a toast sandwich. When he tries to rest, he ends up sitting on the cat and then bursting the beanbag chair. Then the family returns and finds the mess. The little one screams, “Somebody has been eating my toast and they’ve eaten it all up!” The bear thinks the mommy person looks familiar. It turns out it’s Goldilocks, living happily ever after. The playful, mixed-media art in colored pencil, paint, and collage extends the wordplay fun with the scenes of the bear lost in the crowded streets and passing by the Ugly Sister Beauty Parlor, Coffee Beanstalk, and Little Piggy Bank. Great for sharing. Preschool-Grade 3. --Hazel Rochman

"The next minute, he didn't have a crumb of a clue where he was. He was one completely lost bear."

Like a fish out of water, Bear finds himself suddenly and completely lost in the big city. Just a teeny bit scared and legs wobbling, Bear looks for a place to escape the bright lights and horrible din of the bustling city. High-rise apartment building, Snooty Towers, looks like just the right place for a bear who needs to get away from it all. Peeking through a door, Bear discovers the perfect spot to rest. A tasty bowl of porridge, a comfy beanbag chair, a soft bed, and Bear is ready for a quiet nap. Nodding off to sleep, Bear dreams of puttering around a peaceful, green forest in his slippers. All of a sudden, Bear is awakened by a very loud voice from his past, shouting, "Somebody is sleeping in my bed right now!" Wide awake now, Bear comes face to face with someone he hasn't seen in ages. A delightfully, descriptive tale that cleverly uses words in a unique way to tell the story. Engaging and detailed illustrations draw the reader into this original take on a familiar fairy tale.

SO animated, even the type font and style of writing is active and interesting. The little details in the book were fun and the premise was priceless. We love buying this as a gift for all children's parties- definitely good for all kids that are still enjoying fairy tale type stories

Fun book! I read it to my 4 year old, a class of kindergartners and a class of second graders. They all loved it! With the older kids I used it along with a few other versions of books based on Goldilocks and The Three Bears to show examples of storytelling from different perspectives.

If your kid likes the 3 bears, this is a fun story that somewhat compliments the original story line. I have given as gifts and most recipients seem happy. Keeper book!
