Book Description

March 1, 2007 4 and upP and upPhyllis Fogelman Books
Some stories become favored childhood classics with good reason, such as the tale of Goldilocks. Here, in an abundantly funny retelling, the timehonored drama unfolds. This outrageously frilly, jump-roping Goldilocks skips through the bears’ house, reciting saucy rhymes as she goes. Her wide-eyed glee makes a hilarious contrast with the genteel bear family, and children will love poring over the wonderful visual details, such as the bear-related knickknacks slyly scattered throughout the cottage.

Another outstanding collaboration from Caralyn and Mark Buehner, Goldilocks and the Three Bears is perfect for sharing with children, adults, and fairy-tale collectors alike.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—This warm and pleasing retelling of the classic include a rope-jumping Goldilocks in red cowboy boots who bursts with personality. The bears' home is a cozy log cabin set deep in the idyllic woods. The luminous oil-over-acrylic illustrations enhance the story with delightful details. A cylinder of the familiar oat brand sits on the kitchen counter, and a photograph of proud Papa Bear holding a fish and fishing pole hangs in the bedroom. And, characteristic of the Buehners, readers are invited to find a rabbit, cat, and Tyrannosaurus rex hidden in each picture. If your folktale collection could use a freshening up of the Three Bears' story, this is the one to add.—Linda M. Kenton, San Rafael Public Library, CA

From Booklist

She's back, and this time the obnoxious yellow-haired visitor barges into the bears' cozy cabin in the woods, bringing her jump rope. First she tests the three chairs as jump-rope platforms. Then she samples the porridge and moves on to the bedroom. After she is discovered by the bears and makes her great escape, Mama Bear cooks a new pot of porridge, which Papa Bear and Little Wee Bear devour because this time it is "just right." The illustrations show a very traditional bear family--Papa with a bow tie and Mama in a housedress and apron--in a warmly appointed log cabin. Various humorous touches have been slipped into the artwork, and a note on the copyright page informs children that a cat, a rabbit, and a Tyrannosaurus rex are hidden in each picture. Although these figures are probably too small and well hidden for most preschoolers to find, there's still plenty of fun to be had from this goofy version of the familiar tale. Randall Enos

5.0 out of 5 stars Same story, but retold so much better!, March 7, 2007
This review is from: Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Phyllis Fogelman Books) (Hardcover)
Everyone knows the story of little Goldilocks and the Three bears and this is basically the same story but with a lot more added to it! It shows where the bear family have gone while waiting for the hot morning breakfast to cool. Our curious and make yourself at home Goldilocks is skipping rope and looking for a friend to skip with. Up to the door she hops, knocks and no one answers. She's not giving up without 1 more knock and the door opens... and in she hops and so begins our story.

What I like about this book is that the basic story we all grew up with an knew is still there but the author added more elements to this story. For example... when it comes to the beds... Papa's isn't hard... it's rock hard, and mama bear's bed is silky soft and Goldilocks slides off the bed and of course Wee bear bed is the best of all. And without ruining any more of the book I'll end my review here. This is just an enjoyable book with great illustrations!

5.0 out of 5 stars Winner!, May 20, 2007
This review is from: Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Phyllis Fogelman Books) (Hardcover)
I gave this book to my grandaughter at her [...]birthday party and it stopped the show. She and her cousins, [..] had been opening toys and clothes one after the other, hardly glancing at any of them. When she opened this book and they started looking at the beautiful pages, they had to go through the entire book and look at each one! Here's a photo of the opening: [...]

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Mark Buehner classic, March 30, 2007
This review is from: Goldilocks and the Three Bears (Phyllis Fogelman Books) (Hardcover)
The beauty of this rendition of Goldilocks & the 3 Bears is Mark Buehner's illustrations. Always gorgeous, with an I Spy type of hidden animals in each painting, Mark Buehner allows my children to explore the pictures and the text at the same time. While the book is excellent, Mark and Caralyn Buehner have set a high mark. Not as innovative as Superdog and Snowman at Night, but fascinating all the same. I can't wait for the next Mark Buehner book to explore. The text by Caralyn Buehner is serviceable, but lacks the complexities of Fanny's Dream or the rhyming sequences of the Snowmen books.
