UPTEMPO SOUL TRACKS -FOR REAL,

This review is from: Goldwax Northern Soul (Audio CD)
One disc 57 minutes approximately. The remastered sound is clean and warm sounding. The accompanying booklet is informative, with details on each track.
This is a great collection of dance music, popularly known as "Northern Soul". Every track is designed to get your feet (and your body) moving. The various artists represented are a good cross-section of Goldwax Records' stable of performers. This tiny label was second only to the mighty Stax Records in releasing this type of music in the sixties. However, this music is not in emulation of the bigger labels sound. Artists range from well known (James Carr,The Ovations, and a few others) to lesser known singers (the great Spencer Williams,Barbara Perry) to a track by Ivory Joe Hunter. But the the overall consideration here is the music, which blends together seamlessly. Included are a number of previously unissued tracks ("Lets Talk It Over" by Spencer Wiggins,"A Man Is A Mean Thing" by Barbara Perry,"I Don't Want To Take a Chance" by Wee Willie Walker among others) that give this collection even more weight for soul lovers. The folks at Kent Records have put together a nice little package of good, uptempo soul music-no ballads to slow things down. If your taste runs to sixties soul before it became bland, slick product-this is a good collection to own. |
