The first American golfer put stick to ball on Feb. 22, 1888 and since that time the game has burgeoned to include hundreds of courses and hundreds of thousands of players. This handsome volume, written principally by the editors of Golf magazine, pays tribute to that growth. Every conceivable aspect of the sport is covered: there is a brief historic overview, a look at amateur and professional champions, articles on the courses and their designers, on the best players of each decade (women are included from 1938), on the chroniclers of the game, the equipment. Also here are a compilation of the winners of major championships and a ranking of the world's top 100 courses. In addition, there are almost 500 illustrations, many in color. Great record of game. Worth having just for the photo collection and memorabilia displayed.The writing is outstanding and shows the birth of the game on American soil to start of USGA, professionals, ladies entering game, to architects, to players, and literature. Especially enjoy the watercolors of the 100 Heroes of American Golf and the accompanying writeups. Collectors item.
