Golf is this Simple,
By
This review is from: Golf Can't be this Simple: The Swing (Hardcover)
John Toepel shares 5 concepts that absolutely will make your golf easier. I am a professional golf instructor and without a doubt this is the most concise and effective swing instruction book I have ever read. The swings of every great ballstriker display the concepts presented. Only by completly relaxing the upper body can one hit the ball both powerfuly and straight. The backswing cannot be artificially "slowed down" to fit some measurement without sacrificing a players natural tempo. The feet and legs are the power source for all swings. Regretably the average golfer will play his whole life thinking the swing is some mystery that takes years of practice and luck at birth to play well. This is not the case. I greatly improved my ballstriking and teaching skill after reading this book just once and so will you. Keep reading and practicing and refer to the concepts and you will play the best golf of your life. Negative reviews listed below have missed the point of this remarkable book. Don't be fooled, there are no preposterous ideas here; just rock solid concepts to unlock the player you should be.

Best Golf Instructional Book Ever!,

This book significantly reduced my handicap and it made sense. He uses my swing and not some ideal swing. I have Natural Golf Vidios and books and this is the only book that does not try to make a robot out of the average golfer. I look forward to his follow-on books.

Read This First and You Won't Need to Read Another Golf Book,

This review is from: Golf Can't be this Simple: The Swing (Hardcover)
I read this book in about 3 hours. It's very easy to understand because there's really not that much about the golf swing to understand. That's why this book is so great. He demystifies the entire swing and gets you focused on the most important part of golf- playing the game!
I have played golf since I was 6 years old. Now I'm 29 and have wondered over the years why I've pretty much stayed the same or worsened since I was a kid. This book reminds us to play like a kid again, have the swing that comes natural (with the 5 principles in mind) and just get the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible. I would definitely recommend this great book to anyone, as well as his second book, "Golf Can't Be This Simple: Playing the Game."

I am a golf book nut and will read any golf book I can lay my hands on. However, I'm certainly glad I didn't miss the opportunity to read this book of John Toepel's on coaching the Golf Swing. It was refreshing to read his sensible approach to prioritising the various aspects of dispatching the golf ball from the Tee. The mental focus techniques had immediate effect on my game and I lost 2 strokes off my handicap (12) immediately and I still continue to hit them straight. His companion Book "Playing the Game" is also a must read as it contains excellent follow on advice to enjoying the great game of golf.

Top Notch!,
By J. William Goodwine (South Bend, Indiana USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Golf Can't be this Simple: The Swing (Hardcover)
About two years ago, I suffered an injury to the base of my hamstring, the consequence of which was that I was not properly shifting my weight through the swing and consistently pushing the ball to the right. This, coupled with an unfortunate incident involving a worn grip on one of my clubs, made me nearly quit the game. Toepel's careful, clear and cogent analysis of the mechanics of the golf swing have helped so much that if I continue to improve as I have recently, I could ultimately break the club record, theoretically.

Its the real information,
This review is from: Golf Can't be this Simple: The Swing (Hardcover)
I have read and re-read this book, perhaps 7 times. Each time I read it I learn more and see more clearly the power and correctlness of the principles. They have worked wonders with golfers by making the swing knowable for the first time in the history of golf. The golf swing truly is a simple thing that anyone can learn to do well. I wish I had known these powerful principles when I played on the PGA Tour.

I have rarely been so disappointed with a book that I wanted a refund of my purchase price. But several of the "concepts" touted in this book are simply ridiculous.
The primary concept is that by completely relaxing the shoulder muscles and simply shifting the body's weight to the back foot, a golfer can generate enough momentum in the arms to cause them to swing to the top of the backswing. The idea that a golfer can raise his hands when empty, let alone when holding a golf club, to the top-of-the-backswing position with a mere weight shift and without contracting the latisimus dorsi, pectoral, or deltoid muscles is simply preposterous. Another one of the author's concepts is that a slow backswing is no good; the backswing and downswing should be the same speed. This is ridiculous on its face. If you want to read a much better book, I recommend "Tour Tempo" where the authors John Novosel and John Garrity use high-tech video technology to show that the backswing-downswing ratio of virtually every tour player is 3:1, that is, their downswing is three times faster than their backswing. |
