As a high school golf coach, I've used the Golf Rules Illustrated to help the students learn the rules of the game. I really like the anecdotes provided at the end of a chapter on a specific rule, where stories of Phil Mickelson being penalized or Tiger Woods benefitting from the Rules of Golf make the rule a lot more relevant to the students. The Rules also contain helpful pictures/diagrams about the application of the rules in different instances. Great intermediate level tool to teach the Rules of Golf.

All the rules of golf, complete with simple-to-understand pictures and legendary decisions that make sense of the controversial or argumentative situations encountered during a round of golf. If you enjoy golf you will enjoy this book. It not only makes golf's rulings clearer, it tells why the rules are the way they are.

USGA golf rules can be very confusing. This illustrated version makes them clear and easy to understand with excellent illustrations and relevant examples. Great book for anyone wanting to learn the proper application of the rules.

This fully official rules book is so well illustrated with examples of the rules applied and examples of actual events that illustrate the rules that it makes fun reading while learning or reviewing the rules of the sport. I strongly recommend for any golfer or golf fan. It is hard to put down. I keep buying copies for my friends.

If you play golf - this is the book!,

This review is from: Golf Rules Illustrated Effective Through 2011 (Paperback)
This illustrated version is essential to fully understand the rules of golf. The standard little rule book is interesting; this version is everything! You need to be a Philadelphia lawyer to understand the little USGA book. This illustrated book explains the written words of the "pocket" version using photos, diagrams and cites on-point rulings from archives.Since this illustrated version is also USGA sanctioned and authored, it is based on the pocket-book official rules. This is NOT some third-party "interpretation." It is what everyone that plays the game should be reading, BEFORE they tee one up! "You may be playing a fun game you thoroughly enjoy; but - if you don't play by the rules, that's all it is - some game." "If it's golf you wish to play, (not just some game) - this book is for you"!

This makes the standard rule book much easier to understand. A great gift for your golfing friends that may not know some (or sometimes any) of the rules.

Somewhat disappointing,
This review is from: Golf Rules Illustrated Effective Through 2011 (Paperback)
As an experienced golfer and USGA member, I'm sorry I cannot give this book more than three stars (meaning it's only o.k.). It does include all of the official rules, along with some drawings to "illustrate" certain situations, as well as descriptions of certain "incidents" from actual tournaments that serve to "illustrate" the rules in practice. The latter are very interesting, and useful to bring home certain points, and some historical explanations are also interesting, but for the most part the use of the drawings has been poorly thought out and executed. Here's one example. Rule 1-3 says that it is against the rules for players to agree among themselves to waive a rule or penalty. That's on page 22. At the bottom of page 21, before you've come across rule 1-3, there is a drawing of two players agreeing to skip a hole in match play and consider the hole halved [tied]. The USGA's editorial comment at the bottom of the drawing states that an agreement to halve a hole not being played is not an agreement to waive a rule. My criticism. The drawing adds nothing to the understanding of the rule, and in any case it should either follow the statement of the rule, or at least be on the same page as the rule. For obvious reasons, I'm not going to do an illustration-by-illustration critique here. Another criticism is that the graphics do not clearly distinguish the actual rules, which are include in book verbatim, and some of the other material, e.g., "Frequently asked questions." Another issue: unlike the actual rule book alone, this version is not indexed. I bought the book with the thought that it would help me, as a volunteer golf teacher for young people, to explain some of the rules to them by showing them illustrations in the book. It is not going to work for that purpose.

Easy to read and somewhat easy to find a specific ruling. Poorly indexed. They have a long way to go in making rules easier to understand but have made a good start.

This title is a great read regardless of your knowledge of the sometimes mysterious game of golf. I find the examples - mostly professionals who find themselves in sticky situations - some of the most interesting parts of the book. If it can happen to the pros then we are all fodder for rule based errors. The illustrations and character dialogue provide a good review of the text. Finally, the book is of quality materials and print. This was a nice addition to my golf library.

The Golf Rules book is very informative. I can't say it is an easy read, since golf has a heck of lot of necessary rules. It is very easy to get around in, with rules references to other rules, so a book-mark and flipping pages are necessary for jumping around between rules within rules. Nice reference.
