5.0 out of 5 stars A Standout Golf Book!, April 12, 2004

This review is from: Golf Training: The Secrets to Effective Practice and a Lower Score (Finally!) (Paperback)
Paging through this book it doesn't take long to recognize that Golf Training is no ordinary golf book. Instead of the usual stroke savers and swing tips common to the mass of generic golf books out there, Golf Training digs deeper into the fundamentals of mental training, fitness training, developing a good swing, and the keys to effective practice. This latter subject of "how to practice most effectively" is powerful, practical, and backed by what seems to be sound sports science. The author has done her research, and it shows in this clear, authoritative text. Though written by an LPGA pro, I found Golf Training to be a standout book that should help any golfer--male, female, high/low handicap--to play better. This is a glossy book, with many great action and instructional photos that support the text. A classy book and a great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, June 23, 2006
This review is from: Golf Training: The Secrets to Effective Practice and a Lower Score (Finally!) (Paperback)
This is the first golf book I've read that seems to be scientific. Horst really breaks down how to improve in a comprehensive and well reasoned way. I was very pleased when I got the book.

I have started to incorporate some of her teaching tips and it's different! I think it will be helpful and I think this is a great book for intermediate and expert golfers. Beginner golfers are probably better off getting lessons.

Things I like-- it's comprehensive, it's scientific, it's a system. She's obviously in great shape and takes care of herself. It's well written and clear. I was very impressed.

Things I don't like-- it's too short. She needs to write an expanded version. I think she's an excellent writer and I would have liked more thoughts about these topics, stories, etc. The book as it is is pretty much a consise as you can imagine. As I read it the first time I was thinking I needed to read it several times in order to absorb all the ideas in it.

Overall I recommend it if you love the game and want to get better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some good advice on structuring practice sessions, August 18, 2005
By
Dave (Syracuse, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Golf Training: The Secrets to Effective Practice and a Lower Score (Finally!) (Paperback)
I got this book because I wanted to read what she had to say about structuring practice sessions. Her ideas seem pretty sound. She says that beginners should use blocked practice (hit the same club over and over to learn the basics), and that as you get better you should introduce more and more varied and random practice (e.g. hit each club just once, put it back in you bag, hit another club, just like in an actual round). She suggests you should warm up with short irons, then move right away to trouble clubs, because it's during this early part of practice that your brain is best able to learn new things. You should avoid the temptation to hit your best clubs at the range, or at least put this off until the end of your practice session. And, of course, you should spend a lot of time on your short game.

The other material in the book is okay. I mean, it's good, but there isn't much I haven't heard before. I guess the basics don't change much. There are no b.s. "quick fix" tips, which is a good thing in my opinion.

This is a decent book, hopefully the practice tips will pay off. Glad I picked up a copy.
