A Great New Book for Junior Golfers,
By Nancy Berkley "Golf Marketing Consultant" (Palm Beach Gardens, FL USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: My Golfing Day with Dad : A Photographic Golf Storybook (Hardcover)
I love this book and as a writer and consultant in the golf industry, I have read quite a few books for junior golfers. This is a new and different book and it will be a favorite for adults who like to read to children and add personal elements to their story telling. The book is written and photographed by a mom of her husband and son's first golf experience together on the course. Readers will not find text that explains what a "hole" is or a "flagstick." Instead, there is a beautiful photograph of a dad and son on the course that the reader can use as a bridge to talking about the game.
This is a book to be read by adults who love the game and can do their own educating in their own personal style. A three-year old might just enjoy the photos of Grant having fun on the course with his dad and that may be all they talk about. But the photographs provide an opportunity for older children to hear their parents -- or any golfer -- explain why golfers wear golf shoes or what a golf cart is. (There is a particularly nice photo of dad and son heading off on the course in their cart.) Hats off to Bay Hills Golf Course, a public course in suburban Omaha, Nebraska, that allows responsible parents - like Mike Abbott -- to take responsible children -- like Grant -- on a golf cart out on a real course. It is on the course that golf's love affair begins. And, the book has a sense of humor with text such as: "Dad, isn't the fairway where it should land. Uh-oh, look over there. Your ball's in the sand." There is a wonderful action photo of dad hitting out of the bunker. The final photograph in the book is a heartwarming hug between dad and son at the end of their golf day. That's what golf is all about and a wonderful way to introduce the game to children. |
