I am not an anime junkie but I think that this was one of the movies that really got me into animation alongside the original vampire hunter d and Akira. This movie is extremely violent and brutal, yet it is not mindless violence like fist of the northstar. It all works with the plot nicely. At times you may not feel as if you are even watching a cartoon, but a live action movie by how good the story is. This movie is a million times better than Golgo 13: Queen Bee. That movie just plain sucked and does not deserve to be this movie's sequel. But if you liked queen bee you would definately dig this one because the main character is so cool.

This film may seem outdated by today's standards but you have to appreciate the hard work that was put into it. It was also one of the first animated films to use computer animation coupled with traditional cel animation found towards the end sequence. It has a bit to be desired there but was groundbreaking for the time. So, if you like animation with a good plot, or are a student studying film or animation, I highly recommend this movie.

5 REASONS you have to UPGRADE:

. REMASTERED VIDEO - Brand New R2J Component Telecline Print - the previous release was washed out, grainy composite.
. WIDESCREEN ANAMORPHIC - The previous release was letterbox only.
. UNCUT AND UNEDITED - previous releases had the intro edited with scenes missing and the wrong soundtrack on Japanese track.
. IMPROVED TRANSLATION - Subtitles are much more detailed and accurate.
. DIRECTOR'S COMMENTARY - Official Japanese Director's Commentary - previously a rare Japanese dvd exclusive.

This release is released by Discotek, the company that brought you other ultra violent, sexy classics such as Fist of the North Star and the upcoming Mad Bull 34.

I won't go into the details on this one but if you're reading this review, it's likely you're already a fan of Duke Tog and his violent world and you know what the deal is here. I first saw this movie on an untranslated VHS tape back in 1985 and I've been hooked ever since, later seeing the Streamline dubbed version in the theater and buying it on VHS, later picking up the same version on DVD. THis latest edition is by far the most superior of the lot and features the completely unaltered Japanese version (with subtitles) -- the CGI Japanese opening credits and "Pray for You" theme song are restored -- as well as the English version, and the transfer is the clearest I've seen in any form over the past twenty-seven years. There are anime fans who unfairly slag this film off, presumably because it's not operating within a more familiar/popular anime genre, but ignore them. If you like espionage movies or narratives about assassins who get up to all kinds of violent mayhem on an international scale, it's a good bet you'd get a big kick out of GOLGO 13. And it is absolutely NOT for the kiddies! If submitted to the MPAA, this would instantly be granted a "hard" R-rating for nudity, sexual content, and tons of graphic violence.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing, about this movie that I didn't like. This movie is unparalled in many aspects from plot to script and to action. If I had to liken the main character of this movie to anything else then I would have to say he's a mix between James Bond and Leon (from The Professional with Natalie Portman) but even that is a discredit to him. This movie is full of twists and turns and constantly hits you with unexpected developments. There will be characters in it that you love, that you hate, and some that you just feel sorry for. You may even shed a tear or two for the villian. Expect to enjoy every minute of this movie from start to finish and expect the suspense and action to hold up 'till the last second. The movie starts off with action and ends with a surprising plot twist that'll make you want to watch it all over again with your new found knowledge. DO NOT EQUATE THIS MOVIE TO ANYTHING YOU'VE SEEN IN QUEEN BEE. Queen Bee doesn't even begin to compare to this movie and it's very existence does this movie a great dishonor. Do not use that as a basis for deciding whether or not you'll want to watch this one. If you don't give this movie 5 stars, then I don't know what you're looking for.

I don't really have much to say about the film that you couldn't read elsewhere. It's an animated classic by uber director Osamu Dezaki. The art is gorgeous, incredibly detailed and looks like the comic in motion. The jazzy soundtrack is also superb. It's essentially a must own for any animation fan.

Thats the movie, the DVD itself is rather dissapointing. For one, it features next to no extras outside of a short 3 minute tidbit interview with the producer. Next, while the picture is in widescreen, it's non-anamorphic which really ruins things for anyone with a HDTV. There's a problem in the audio area as well. For the Japanese audio track, the wrong music is played for the opening and closing credit sequences, while both English audio tracks play the correct music. Urban Vision also saw fit to alter the logo sequence, inserting a terribly out of place new logo graphic. I guess they felt people buying a Japanese animation DVD would have a problem with a Japanese title logo..?

Of course outside of importing the Japanese region 2 DVD, this is the best option for owning the movie at this point. So unless your content with your rotting Streamline vhs tape, I suggest you pick this up.
