Tayu is named after the legendary Chinese hero who saved his country from flooding by creating a series of waterways. In the game, each player attempts to create as many water channels from one side of the board to the other while blocking his competitor at the same time. Twists and turns are the norm in this fast-paced strategy game.

The object of the game is to create canals from one side of the board to the other - you play east to west and your opponent plays north to south. Your score is the product of the number of connections you finish with at each side of the board. At each turn you draw a tile from the pool and play it so that it connects to the tiles that are already played. Each tile covers three grid squares and has canal segments that enter/exit from 3 of the 8 possible sides covered by the tile. The game requires a combination of strategic thinking, spatial reasoning, and luck of the draw.
When we first got this game, my wife and I would have scores like 81 to 64. Then we learned how to play defensively, and now we have scores like 2 to nothing. The tension between trying to take advantage of potential scoring opportunities while also trying to block your opponent's path to the edge is what really makes this game fun. A game takes about 30 minutes, and you can play with two or four (with two teams) and you can also play with 3 where the third player is a spoiler whose role is to prevent the other two from scoring. A nice plus is that the game comes with a drawstring cloth bag to hold the pieces, and the board is designed to snap apart into two pieces. The board is designed with dimples that mate to the tiles and hold the pieces in place, and we've found that we can leave the box behind and take the game on an airplane to play in flight on the tray table. It really shortens the flight time. My brother has a version with much nicer looking tiles, whereas this one is cheesy plastic, but the board for the high end version doesn't have the design that holds the pieces in place and thus isn't so good for airplanes. So this version is more functional and the other version has better aesthetics. I'm not sure which I prefer, but you can actually find this version whereas you might hunt for the other for a long time, and it's not that much better. Anyway, this is a great game that can be learned in a few minutes but if you're competitive you can make it as strategic as chess or go.

We bought this game for our kids after playing it at a friend's house. My husband and I have played it more than our kids have! It's alot of fun and quite challenging. It appears to be a European game as the instructions are in many different languages and we read the Great Britain version of them. I gave it 4 stars for its educational value because you're mainly using strategy and problem-solving skills. The set-up is extremely simple - just snap the two pieces of the board together and start playing.
