A truly amazing artifact that we can visit at the American History Museum today . Next to the Uniform of George Washington and all his camp equipment , this is their greatest Treasure from the Revolution that the Smithsonian has This is the best book available on the subject the " Gondola Philadelphia " . There are many photos of the boat and of the replica that was built for the bicentennial . It is a history of an American War Boat and the battle it fought in ( also sunk in ) . Its sinking preserved it and a mistake in where people thought it was saved it from salvage and souvenir hunters . This was a private salvage by two men and it would be decades before the Smithsonian accepted it . It does a great job on the history of the boat from 1934 till now . This was an all Army fleet after the boat was raised it was offered first to the Smithsonian (they did not have a place for it nor the funds at that time to preserve it ), then to Vermont then The US Navy , the navy said in their reply " why would we want an Army boat " . Of course today their web page calls it a Navy ship and 30 years later the Smithsonian wanted the boat . It is now a prized display , you can visit the Smithsonian web page see American History Museum to see photos of the Philadelphia Display. Till then the men who raised and cared for it at their own cost made a floating ( on a barge )museum which they moved from place to place to show the public for a small fee to get interest in the boat . This book details their efforts in saving this boat till the day that the Elites woke up to the value of this artifact . A great companion book is " Benedict Arnold's Navy " for more on the history of the building and fighting of the fleet of which only the Philadelphia remains .

Very interesting discussion on a significant naval battle that would eventually turn the tide of the Revolutionary War. Highly recommended.
