The unequal balance of the U.S. North versus South is explained in detail in this book. The mind-set of the South was based on the aristocracy of Europe and never bought into the "free man" mentality of the North. With the industrialization of the North, the South was left to wobble and falter and give rise to a new kind of discrimination through a terrorization and party system that would not acknowledge the African-American as an equal.
