the soaring rock of mono won me over at a live show in chicago and i have been in love ever since.their album work doesn't reach the highs of their live set (and i challenge you to find a rock band worth their salt for which this is true) but it is lovely. the power they display when they do display it is not raw. they shape it and make a form of it which separates their powerful peaks from those of other bands. it is not restraint but creation. yes, creation. there is a sense of the galactic in mono's sense of space and also of channeled power. beautiful work. i have three CDs. this is my favorite and the most accessible, i think.

More Loudness War Crap,
This review is from: Gone: A Collection of EP's 2000-2007 (Audio CD)
I'm sick of spending money on cd's with interesting music only to find the mastering or possibly the mixing guy has cranked all the knobs to 11 to get the highest rms level possible. During the supposedly powerful bits on this cd, there is monstrous amounts of compression, distortion, and clipping. I would avoid this disc if you care about sound quality. Maybe the vinyl is better, I don't know. For example, listen to Yearning from 7:40 to 12:00. It sound absolutely horrible.Look up loudness war at wikipedia or google 'loudness war lousy sound' for more info. |
