5.0 out of 5 stars Gothic Love Songs, December 21, 2001
By
Pic McGee (DUBAI United Arab Emirates) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gone (Audio CD)
I'm not a fan of love songs, not by any stretch. In fact the only "love" song I liked was Filth's "her Ghost In The Fog" which, if you've heard it is not your conventional love song. That's one of the big things I noticed about this band. They really only have like 2 love songs on this album, "Closer" and "Grace", the others aren't really related to love at all.

The actual music itself isn't that complex, but it works. It's not fast, there's no growly vocals, in fact they're totally clean, with some female vocals. It' very gothic though, hence it's genre, GOTH METAL. But one thing I do appreciate is their new singer. If you've heard their debut album, I wouldn't blame you for being skeptical about these guys, but don't worry their old "singer" is gone.

Check out Blood of Your Soul, New Dawn, and Grace

4.0 out of 5 stars A great album, July 26, 2001
This review is from: Gone (Audio CD)
Anyone into the recent trend of finnish dark/rock(i.e. HIM To/die/for) will eat this up...... i really like this album.... great songs..... although it's nothing too original(which kept me from giving this 5 stars), it's worth every penny..... all songs are very radio friendly, which makes me wonder why this style of music has not caught on in the united states...

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure bliss the whole way through!, March 27, 2004
By
This review is from: Gone (Audio CD)
even albums by some of my favorite bands (exs: the cure, HIM, AFI, nightwish) have some songs on them that i just don't like. i often find myself, even for bands as great as HIM, skipping through songs to get to the ones that i like more. often i see reviewers say about an album "this is NOT one of those albums where you skip songs... you can play it the whole way through and love it all!". well, then i get to listening to the album and i find that 80% of the material is boring and impossible to get through without wanting to chop your wrists off with a rusty butcher knife...
however, this album truly is the type of material in which you can just lay back and listen to the whole way through.
here is a short break-down of the 8 tracks (yes, not alot, but most are rather long) on this album...

LOSING THE GROUND - 8/10 - The keyboards to this song are pretty cool... and so is the beat. the only thing it lacks is a good chorus. in fact, unless i am deaf, there doesn't even seem to be a main chorus.. perhaps a less obvious one but who knows. either way though, very catchy, and very neat sounding. not the best song on the album, but probably the best choice for opener...

SNOW WHITE SUICIDE - 9/10 - It was upon hearing this song that i gained interest in the band Entwined. However, i can't help but point out that the first 20 seconds of this song sound almost IDENTICAL to the first 20 seconds of HIM's "Right Here in My Arms"... just listen to them both... the beginning sound almost exactly alike. good chorus... and sub-chorus too.

CLOSER (MY LOVE) - 10/10 - One of the slower songs on the album. upon the first listen one might think that this song is too slow and boring to be any good... but once the chorus hits i guarantee that it'll make up for all of that.

NEW DAWN - 9/10 - i might give this song only an 8/10... if not for the fact that it's not just the chorus that sticks out in this song. the chorus is deserving of an 8 (it's good, but not fantastic), however, unlike some of their other songs, the verses too are catchy. this was i believe the bands first and biggest hit.

GRACE - 10/10 - this is by far the most amazing Entwine song ever made. This is also the most beautiful song on the album... even compared to track 3. I can't help but think of The Cure whenever i hear the beginning of this song... or perhaps maybe late Pumpkins. The keyboards and strings are beautiful... and the chorus is fantastic.

SILENCE IS KILLING ME - 8/10 - after hearing the first 30 seconds of this song.. .i was very excited. it had a neat little piano part, and then broke into thrashing guitars... similary to HIM's "the sacrament"... just not nearly as genius as it. not to say that the rest of the song dissappointed me... but i just htought that they could've changed the piano a bit after awhile and perhaps added a more catchy chorus. however, the music and lyrics are great.

BLOOD OF YOUR SOUL - 9/10 - half of this song is kind of annoying... as where half of it is amazing... hence the 9/10. actually... it's more liek 10% of the song is annoying... cos right before the chorus it kind of sounds like a mellow Godsmack song (heaven forbid). however... the first and last minute of the song are enthrancing... and the chorus is so odd that it's rather horribly wonderful. quite depressing however...

THRU THE DARKNESS - 9/10 - even though the song isn't very "catchY... it'd be a mis-justice to give this song anything below a 9. no it doesn't have a "sing along" tune or anything... but the music, like track 7, is so eerie that it has an odd, somewhat distorted beauty to it... even if the singer DOES sound like sanan in it :)

anyways... that's about it. i can't begin to recommend this album enough. the singers voice is not so rough and rugged that you can't stand it... and the songs never get old.
i'm very picky with music... even when it comes to melodid finnish gothrock... but this album does not dissappoint me in the least. it's a shame that their next two albums couldn't have been this good... or else i might have a new favorite band!
