Book Description

June 19, 2012 Kate Burkholder (Book 4)

Linda Castillo’s bestselling series has been called “gripping” [People] and “impossible to put down” [Bookpage] and the “teeth chattering suspense” [USA Today] continues with GONE MISSING—a deeply chilling novel about a rite of passage gone horribly wrong.

Rumspringa is the time when Amish teens are allowed to experience life without the rules. It’s an exciting time of personal discovery and growth before committing to the church. But when a young teen disappears without a trace, the carefree fun comes to an abrupt and sinister end, and fear spreads through the community like a contagion.

A missing child is a nightmare to all parents, and never more so than in the Amish community, where family ties run deep. When the search for the presumed runaway turns up a dead body, the case quickly becomes a murder investigation. And chief of Police Kate Burkholder knows that in order to solve this case she will have to call upon everything she has to give not only as a cop, but as a woman whose own Amish roots run deep.

Kate and state agent, John Tomasetti, delve into the lives of the missing teen and discover links to cold cases that may go back years. But will Kate piece together all the parts of this sinister puzzle in time to save the missing teen and the Amish community from a devastating fate? Or will she find herself locked in a fight to the death with a merciless killer?

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Linda Castillo ! June 28, 2012

Linda Castillo's "Gone Missing" is an excellent read. Full of suspense and exciting plot twists, "Gone Missing" is a wonderful addition to the Kate Burkholder series of books.

"Gone Missing" finds Police Chief Kate Burkholder working in a new capacity. Called in to consult on a missing person case by her friend and lover John Tomasetti, Kate's Amish past is paramount in helping to investigate a missing Amish teen. Away from Painters Mill for the first time ( in the series ), Kate is juggling many emotions and opportunities - including a sudden personal angle on what could be a horrible crime. I won't give away any plot points here, but suffice to say that Kate's inner dialog and Castillo's fabulous storytelling combine for an excellent book.

Frankly, the Kate Burkholder series ( Sworn To Silence, Pray For Silence, Breaking Silence and Gone Missing ) is a wonderful character study, surrounded by a fantastic storylines.

"Gone Missing" has some excellent writing and the final scenes are nothing short of breath-takeing and truly griping. What always attracts me to these books, however, is the wonderful character of Kate Burkholder. Kate is a complex and layered heroine - far from perfect, she carries her pain and her doubt squarely in her heart. Castillo has again done a great job of capturing a complicated and tortured soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner June 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I started this series at. . .well. . . the beginning--with book one--and was instantly caught up in the characters and setting as well as the excellent writing and complex plots. Kate changes and grows from book to book, so I suggest you read the books in order. Watching those changes enhances the stories. As in all the books, a horrific crime has taken place with ties to the Amish community which Kate left in her teens. Her ability to speak Pennsylvania Dutch and her knowledge of Amish ways helps solve the crimes but also underlines how cut off she is from her childhood and family. Little by little, she is learning to trust and open herself even as she comes face to face with evil, and in this book more than the others. Kate is asked to consult on cases of missing children in the state which leads her back home. I cannot recommend these books too much and hate to wait for the next one.

5.0 out of 5 stars She keeps getting better and better July 7, 2012

I enjoyed Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder books. They just keep getting better and better. I loved this book. I almost wanted to call in late for work to finish it. The characters are very well developed, they are REAL. Kate is a Police Chief who gets called in to help with some missing Amish teenagers. She has a friendship/love with state agent John. They both have baggage. Then it hits close to home. A teenage girl is missing who is her sister's niece (Amish). Since Kate is no longer Amish there is tension with her family. This is a series (4), I recommend you start with Sworn to Silence. Enjoy!
