5.0 out of 5 stars A Refeshingly, Cool, Inviting Wind!
After personally witnessing Joe Morello execute a ONE-handed drum "roll" at a seminar of his in Madison Wi. in the early '60's,his exquisite brush-work solo on "Swanee River",was not surprising, but is nevertheless totally pleasing each time I hear it! 1.0 out of 5 stars Unplayable CD of "Gone With the Wind"
I bought this CD mostly for two tracks: "Lonesome Road" and "Gone With the Wind." There were a bunch of small but significant scratches, and "Lonesome Road" only played for about 20-30 seconds. I wish he'd checked it before shipping, though maybe that's a lot to ask of such a low-profit transaction.

This "jazz drummer's drummer"(in my estimation),also shines radiantly in his "Short'nin Bread" solo,on melodically-tuned tom-toms.
Eugene Wright's delightful bass solo in "Old Man River",leaves no room for criticism either, confirming that he & Morello were two, sometimes overlooked, pillars supporting this innovative,trail-blazing quartet.
Much (deserved)praise has been showered upon Brubeck & Desmond of course,& one listen to "Georgia on my Mind",with Paul's luscious, almost haunting sax solo & Dave's beautiful piano interpretation will suffice to instruct anyone unfamiliar with them,as to why their music remains so popular to this day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frankly, my dear, I DO give a damn!, March 7, 2001

There are so many ways to view the influence of Dave Brubeck and this very special quartet - I'll stick to music. The power of these four to create new perspectives is at its highest on this CD. I owned the vinyl LP, wore its grooves down to the other side and if there is a limit to the life of a CD, I am sure I'll find it! The one word I can think of to describe what I hear from Morello,Wright,Desmond and Dave on this CD is reverance.

4.0 out of 5 stars good music, bad sound, March 11, 2003
This review is from: Gone With the Wind (Audio CD)
I recently bought this album. While the music (as expected from any Brubeck album) was good, I found the sound quality not up to the mark. The bass was lumpy & the sound lacked transparency. This is surprising as TIME OUT & BRUBECK TIME - both of which were recorded prior to this album - have much better sound quality. Do others find the same problem as me?

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SOUL CLENSER!!!!!!!!!!!!, January 26, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gone With the Wind (Audio CD)
This album isn't fireous, isn't wild, and isn't played in odd time signatures. The arrangments are good and the group plays great. All I can say is that, after I listened to it, I felt refreshed. The group takes it easy and quiet, but down right swings. A must for even a Ornett Colemen fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brubeck's finest record, January 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Gone With the Wind (Audio CD)
This is a beautiful record, probably Brubeck's finest. Here he shows that he can really swing. The bassist and the drummer are very good too (especially Joe Morello on the drums), creating real fine swing.

The star of the band is, however, Paul Desmond. He plays great all the way - two simply marvellous solos, a hard swinging one on Gone with the wind and the most beautiful ballad solo of all times on Georia on my mind.

No one who loves the sinuous alto of Paul Desmond can do without this record.

One of Dave Brubeck's best! Rates up there with "Time Out" and the "Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall" albums. Well recorded and a delight to listen to..a drum lover's delight. Joe Morello at his finest. Recorded in 1959/1960. A must own for intellectual jazz lovers. Highly recommeded!
