Book Description

November 1, 1999
_Gone with the Wind_ is one of the most beloved novels and movies in U.S. history. Margaret Mitchells Pulitzer Prize winning novel has sold millions of copies worldwide, and has been translated into many languages. The movie, produced by David O. Selznick, is one of the most watched in cinema history. With Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, the cast was most memorable. But with all of the books and videos, one event is usually forgotten: the premiere of the movie in Atlanta.

This is now remedied with the fourth book on GWTW by noted author Herb Bridges. From December 13 to 15, 1939, the city of Atlanta was transformed into the envy of the nation. On the brink of World War II, Atlanta welcomed Hollywood to the South to celebrate the movie that would commemorate the American Civil War and its devastating effect on the South. With Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, David O. Selznick, Olivia de Havilland, and many others, the premiere was the social and cultural event of the century in Atlanta.

This photographic essay contains photos of the stars themselves, Atlanta before, during, and after the premiere, and the citizens of the city who turned out not just for the premiere, but for the other events such as the Grand Ball. From movie stars to horse-drawn carriages, from a transformed theater to GWTW merchandise, this is the book that takes us back to an event often neglected in the _Gone with the Wind_ story.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Bridges' book is full of fascinating photos and facts and is interesting reading for those interested in _Gone with the Wind_ as well as those wishing to see the events that occurred in Atlanta for the movie premiere. It was certainly the social and historical event of the century." -- Fayetteville Citizen

"Plenty of books have been written about the movie classic which shook the world: _Gone with the Wind: The Three-Day Premiere in Atlanta_ focuses on the premiere of the movie in Atlanta, providing a narrower focus than most but offering more depth as it considers the effects of the movie upon the community. Photos of the stars and Atlanta before, during, and after the premiere make for an involving account." -- Bookwatch

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing buy, October 12, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Gone with the Wind: The Three-Day Premiere in Atlanta (Hardcover)
I was distracted by mistakes and typos. Book is only good for die-hard fans who collect EVERY piece of GWTW memorabilia. Better off watching the film again or re-reading the original book. Doesn't come close to David O'Selznick's Hollywood; Memo from David O'Selznick or The Road to Tara.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE for any GWTW fan! Worth every penny!, February 18, 2000
This review is from: Gone with the Wind: The Three-Day Premiere in Atlanta (Hardcover)
This book is incredible (as are all of Mr. Bridges books). I am a huge fan of the film and own most of the books published about it and its stars, but this book contains photos I have never seen. It is a pleasure to browse through and read beginning to end! Fabulous!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book is like a time capsule of a much anticipated event. One night, one premiere and it's all captured in a single book. Lots of pictures with descriptions of what everyone is wearing and who's who at the showing. Must have been quite an event!
