Remember C+C Music Factory?
Well,if you don't,I'll do a quick little refresher.Robert Clivalles and the late David Cole were the hottest producing team in late '80s dance music.Janet Jackson,Natalie Cole,Fleetwood Mac,among others got remixes from them and in 1990,they produced a hit album for the long-gone(and long out-of-print) girl group Seduction(remember "Two To Make It Right"-that was them!).Around that time, the two decided to become a peforming unit with two of their discoveries(an attractive Liberian girl named Zelma Davis and a Brooklyn-born rapper named
Freedom Williams).

Since the two producers(Clivelles & Cole) weren't proper singers or dancers, they recriuted Davis to sing and Freedom to rap.

OK,you got everything now? Good.

C+C Music Factory released their debut,"Gonna Make You Sweat" in
1990 and the album and C+C were huge.
Now,I bet, everyone has heard the ubiqtious title track before
or the percolating spunk of "Things That Make You Go Hmm" but there's more here that well..."makes you sweat".

The "Gonna Make You Sweat"-sound-a-like "Here We Go(Let's Rock & Roll)" was a Top 5 hit in '91 and boy, does it get you moving!
If I was an excerise instructor, this song would be played non-stop during our workouts! The reggae-tinged "Ooh Baby" is another winner. On this cut,we hear the vocals of,get this,David Cole. The beat on "Ooh Baby" is a slighty slowed down house tempo but still makes you move. This should've been a single,if you ask me.

As you probably can tell,I really miss the '90s(especially the
early-to-mid) and C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat"
brings back several memories of the period.
So,almost 11 years later,what happened to C+C Music Factory?

Well, unfortanly David Cole passed away in 1995(R.I.P.) while Robert C. still actively produces(he produced Aretha Franklin's
1993 club hit "A Deeper Love").As far as I know,Zelma is M.I.A.
and so is Freedom(speaking of Freedom,he released a self-titled
solo album on Columbia in 1993).
WOW...C+C were hot back in the day and they were better than the other faceless Euro-dance acts that coughed up some pop hits in the early 9-0s(Snap!,Technotronic,The K.L.F.,Black Box,etc.).

But whatever C+C's former members are up to now,"Gonna Make You Sweat" is going to make you do just that-SWEAT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody dance now! Hot dance album to this day!, June 15, 2006
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
C+C Music Factory had a hot dance album when it came out in 1990! Most of those songs from that album I still love to this day. Freedom Williams' raps rock hard on all the numbers. And while they apologized to Martha Wash in later years for not crediting her in the songs, she sounds dynamite on the ones she sang on here! David Cole and Robet Clivilles' music playing on the album with their rapid paced keyboard playing and rhythms are just superb on all the tracks. Gonna Make You Sweat, Things that Make You Go Hmmm, Here We Go (which is kind of similar to Sweat), Just A Touch of Love, and that long ambient 9-minute
song in the middle are strong standouts. Keep in mind that dance music was hugely popular in late 1990 and early 1991 and this really represented that time well before everybody shifted to slower, calmer songs. They performed in later years at some clubs worldwide, but not with the relentless peak of back then.

5.0 out of 5 stars A watershed release that is a real classic gem for all times!, May 27, 2006
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
The closing months of the 1980s and the early 1990s I think were among the greatest watershed years in the history of techno-dance music. Wildly popular in Chicago at the time, I have fond memories of these songs when I was seven and/or eight years old when these were new. Now at the ripe old age of 23, I still love these songs from this era. "Gonna Make You Sweat" captures among the most glorious of this phenomenal era in music history.

C+C Music Factory have sadly been somewhat tainted with accusations of the singer in the music videos of their hit singles featuring the women singers actually lipsinching as the actual singer who sang that piercing vocal of "EVERYBODY DANCE NOW!!!!" at the beginning of the title track was none other than Marsha Wash!

4.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the club., November 8, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
Is it just me, or were the early 90's an incredible watershed for music? You had a rapper named MC Hammer who hit it huge with the mainstream, something that should not have been possible in this universe, the birth of the alt-rock movement, and the meteoric success of C&C Music Factory and their brand of...club music. Yes, that's right, club music (sometimes referred to as "techno" for some bizarre reason, but never mind that). Ten minute songs. Repetition. Unapologetically dancable beats. Absolutely no attempt whatsoever to be "meaningful". Damn, I miss those days...

Well, I needn't go into great detail about Gonna Make You Sweat. If you have any familiarity with club music, you know exactly what you're getting here: Pure, unfiltered dance from start to finish. There's quite a bit of repetition (even more than in your typical club album), but the only song I found really tedious was Just A Touch Of Love.

No, no...don't even try to change my mind. Look, read my other reviews. I have more than enough deep, meaningful, evocative music. Can't I just kick back and have fun once in a while?

5.0 out of 5 stars Early 90's R&B/Dance-Pop, October 6, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
This music is still good! It is more in the style of Dance-Pop with R&B flavour of the time. Most of the songs feature the vocal stylings of Martha Wash. It holds up well compared to the atrocious Trance music. Overall if you like any Euro-Dance or Dance-Pop artist or group from the 80's or 90's, you'll like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars C+C - the emperors of dance music !, July 23, 2000

This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
C+C,along with SNAP (they're back!) and TECHNOTRONIC revolutionized house/dance music with powerful groove that makes you move, beats that make you freak out and go from side to side, and gospel vocals that lift you up and make you chant.C+C rocked all the 5 continents, got all the prizes, praise, respect it deserves. It brought dance music to a new level, made it commercial, pop, likeable and most of all respected.Clivillés & Cole(what a pity he passed away- dance music will never be he same) spawned a good number of albums, compilations (ministry of sound v.3,for example) and CD singles(I'm lucky I own all of them), nice video clips and remixed other artists'works like no other dj/producer at that time did. This is C+C music factory - undoubtedly one of the best things dance music has got to offer. This is C+C's first album, but not their first work. This album is an excellent sample of C+C is all about.Listen carefully to every track and then admit : C+C is the cornerstone of intelligent and masterfully produced dance music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy, April 12, 2007
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
this CD blends hip-hop, dance and rock sounds. It's good music. It comes from the age of Prince and MC Hammmer, and it's really too bad that they didn't continue to make music. Things that make you go Hmmm, and Gonna Make you Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) are great club songs. It seems that their style of music was merely a passing fad, and why they died off after this album. All of the songs are good. Collaborations by Freedom Williams and other members show that they're very talented artists. It's original, edgy and as good today as it was then.

My god, it's hard to believe that sixteen years ago I was jamming out to these tracks at my local roller skating rink. What a trip, I still remember every lyric! Some great memories associated with these songs! Take a trip down memory lane with this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars C+C help superstar dj's have solo albums, December 30, 2002
By
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
David cole and robert clivilles were the first true dj/producer team to come out of the underground nyc club scene. With gonna make you sweat being more for a pop crowd than an underground nyc club thang. But on the very last song which is an hidden track they go back to their club roots. With their singles from gonna make you sweat they recut the vocals and turned their pop cuts into the club grooves for dj's and club kids. Cole/clivilles were house producers who helped changed the pace of dance music for a short time.Gonna make you sweat was a different album then technotronic or snap's debut.Because cole/clivilles wanted to break from doing the normal house remix or underground house cut. They were also musicians mixing live drums with drum loops and programing.David cole played keyboards and sang on some of the tracks. They helped dj/remixers like hex hector get their start by working with them. This was the first pop album by an underground dj/produer team.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where in the world is FREEDOM WILLIAMS?, June 18, 2003
This review is from: Gonna Make You Sweat (Audio CD)
The muscle-bound front man for C & C Music Factory may be the one that most associate with the early 90's group, but the real wizards behind the ensemble were Robert Clivilles and the late David Cole. Taking up where 70's disco and 80's dance left off, the duo billed their music as a melding of rock, soul, funk, pop, and techno.

At a little over an hour in length, the album features their number one hits on respective Billboard lists (the title cut, "Here We Go", Things that Make You Go Hmmmm..." and "Just a Touch of Love"). Another highlight is "Live Happy", a song obviously influenced by "the Philly Sound" from the seventies.

Clivilles and Cole were responsible for the music and the arrangements with rap by Williams and vocals from Zelma Davis and an uncredited Martha Wash.

When 50 Cent was still in high school, honing his "craft", C & C Music Factory was showing what it really was like "in da club".
