3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay for me...
I purchased this book based on all of the 5* reviews but I couldn't really get into it. I didn't really get a feel for any sparks between the two main characters. The "heroine" annoyed me for most of the book. She's supposed to be so strong and brave but every time she overheard something she jumped to conclusions instead of talking it out. She almost refused a child the...

Since Darren Whitman was twelve and Alicia Taylor was eight, they have hated each other...or so it seemed. Each summer when Alicia's cousin, Kendrick, came to visit them, Darren, Kendrick and their friend, Troy become royal pains in Alicia's behind. When Alicia attends her cousin Kendrick's high school graduation, things suddenly take on a drastic change when she spots Darren all grown up and more gorgeous than she could have ever imagined.

Darren on the other hand cannot forget Alicia, the pretty girl wearing the red dress at his graduation. Yet, he must remind himself that she is only fourteen and that he has many more women to conquer. Unfortunately, he is quickly snapped back into reality when his father tells him of an arrangement that he and Alicia's father has made. The arrangement involves him marrying Alicia or being disinherited from the Whitman fortune and causing Alicia's father to lose his publication business. Although Darren refuses to let his father dicate his life, he finds himself being captivated by Alicia once he graduates from college and finds her all grown-up and more beautiful than the last time he saw her.

Despite what is at stake, Darren eventually finds himself genuinely falling in love with Alicia. Unable to resist Darren's charm, Alicia's preconceived notions regarding Darren quickly evaporates even though she tries to resist her newfound feelings with everything she has.

In Gwyneth Bolton's I'm Gonna Make You Love me, you will find yourself laughing, rooting and maybe even shedding a tear or two as you journey down the path of love and deception with Alicia and Darren. If you are a romance fan, this is a must read. Gwyneth Bolton will definitely make you love her, Darren and Alicia as you turn the pages on this exciting romantic thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars DYNAMITE READ!!! FIVE STAR READ!!!, October 6, 2006
Gwyn's writings has captured the raw emotions of her generation and propelled a clever story line in "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me." As a male reader, I was caught up in the plot and the stong imagages of her characters and could not put the book down. There were a lot of moments when I wanted to say to Alicia and Darren, "right on" and on the other hand say "what the hell are you doing, you're going to mess it up." Hats off to you Gwyneth Bolton for capturing your dreams through words. Stay strong and do not let the haters bind your freedom to express love. I've already pre-purchased your December release "Divine Destiny."

4.0 out of 5 stars Love Conquers All, February 13, 2006

The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
In I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME by Gwyneth Bolton we meet Alicia Taylor and Darren Whitman. They grew up together and are considered childhood nemeses. Darren was a few years older than Alicia and considered the girl in pigtails and braces a brat who drove him nuts. Although Alicia pretended as if she didn't care too much for Darren she secretly had a crush on him and dreamed of them one day living happily ever after. That dream suddenly came to an end when she overheard Darren and her cousin talking and what she heard changed her feelings for him forever or so she thinks.

Now that they are adults, Darren thinks Alicia is hot -to -trot and would love to get to know the woman she has become. However she is still heartbroken by what she overheard Darren say as a teen and can't stand the sight of him, at least that's what she is telling herself. She vows not to allow anyone close to her heart especially the charming player Darren has become. Unbeknownest to Alicia and Darren, their fathers have devised a plan to arrange a marriage between the two, and Darren inadvertently becomes aware of their little scheme. He vows to make Alicia fall in love with him the old fashioned way, but will she give in to her true feelings or continue to put up a front?

I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME is a light-hearted novel that has memorable characters and deals with a unique storyline. In the novel you see how pain caused from childhood carries over to adulthood and affects the choices you make. It also shows no matter how hard you try to fight something, if it's meant to be, then it shall be. A refreshing new voice in the literary industry, Gwyneth Bolton is a name to watch out for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Debut Romance Novel, November 13, 2006

I rarely and close to never give reviews but this book was worthy of it. Ms. Bolton delivered on a novel for true romance readers. This book had drama, excitement, jealousy, love, romance, steamy sex scenes and more. This was a story of a true romance that span from the first childhood crush to walking down the aisle later in adulthood. This is one book that I will not donate to my local library but keep in my personal collection because I am sure that I will revisit the Taylor-Whitman families once again the future. I am truly looking forward to future novels from this promising writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taming of the shrew meets hip hop, March 5, 2006
You'll truly enjoy this debut novel from Ms. Bolton. It's a new twist on the arranged marriage theme, involving a modern, hip-hop loving, third-wave feminist, and the charming, publishing company heir, that loves her and aims to win her heart. I loved the all the banter between the two characters, and the idea that although Alicia's a debutant from a wealthy Detroit family, she wants to be her own person. This sassy lady sees education as the key to her future, rather than marriage. My kind of heroine. It's fun to watch Darren weave his magic to win her heart. If you're like me and hated to say goodbye to Flex, the hip-hop mogul friend of Alicia and very reminiscent of Sean Combs, good news. It's not the last you've heard of him. Ms. Bolton's next novel will feature Flex and his first love, Sweet Dee, in Sweet Sensations. We can't wait Ms. Bolton!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome!, January 4, 2008
Reading this book was such a fantastic experience. Definitely one for the romantics. Gwyneth did an excellent job of pulling the reader in and keeping the story interesting. The characters came to life from the very beginning. Such a treat getting to know Alicia and Darren. Even more so experiencing their growth and maturity. Very entertaining read. It was hard to put this one down. Kudos to Gwyneth on a book well written!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic debut novel ... and the follow up story is just as delicious!, January 14, 2007
In an attempt to save the family name, rebuild the family legacy, hang onto Taylor Publishing, Kyle Taylor arranged a marriage between his daughter, Alicia and Darren, the son of Jonathan Whitman, in order to avoid a hostile takeover.

Alicia was only eight years old when her father arranged her marriage to Darren. Alicia was never told of this arrangement and she definitely wouldn't be pleased if she did know. While growing up, Darren was the friend of her brother and in her opinion mean . . . she hated him. Later Alicia developed a crush on Darren only to have her heart crushed when she overheard him say that he didn't like her. His words will come back to haunt him.

Darren was twelve years old when the agreement was made between their fathers. In his opinion Alicia was a brat and he made it his mission to antagonize her as much as possible. Years later, Darren had returned home for the summer and enjoyed talking with Alicia until she overheard him deny any feelings for her. Alicia cut him out of her life completely but she was constantly in Darren's thoughts.

Darren didn't find out about the arranged marriage to Alicia until the day he graduated from boarding school. His father tried making it sound like a family tradition. Darren had an image of a little girl in pigtails and braces in his head and there's no way he's going to marry "the brat." Instead his mind wanders to a woman he'd met right after graduation whom he'd invited to a party later that night. They hadn't even had time to exchange names. It isn't until they meet up at the party that Alicia admits that she is there attending her cousin's graduation. Darren realizes who she is seconds after she tells him the name of her cousin. For Alicia, recognition takes a few minutes longer and a little taunting from Darren. He's more enthusiastic about the idea of marrying `Licia now, but only if she falls in love with him. No amount of pressure from his father is going to force him into a loveless marriage. Darren knows from Alicia's past stubborn behavior that if she finds out about their fathers' agreement she won't ever give him the chance. With a hip-hop producer, Flex, escorting Alicia to various hot spots, it looks like Darren may not have a chance but he's determined to somehow get Alicia to love him.

Gwyneth Bolton's I'M GONNA MAKE YOU LOVE ME is smart, sassy, and a whole lota fun! I absolutely love Alicia's determinedly stubborn streak and her outright defiance of tradition. She's a strong-willed character who isn't about to allow any man, including her father tell her what to do. Darren is just as determined but not in such an in-your-face way. What I really adore though is that Ms. Bolton's writing transcends color barriers. The characters are brilliantly represented and realistic. This is a wonderful debut story for this obviously talented author. I can't wait for Flex's story now. I'm dying to know more details about his involvement with another artist.

I am fortunate enough to have an ARC of SWEET SENSATION which releases in March and I have to tell you I'm LOVING Flex and Sweet Dee's story!

4.0 out of 5 stars Game, Set, Match, April 27, 2006

Bold, outspoken, stubborn, Alicia (Licia) Taylor has set goals for herself as the only child of publishing magnet Kyle Taylor, she wants to complete her MBA, work in her fathers company, preparing to take over when her daddy is ready to step down.
The fact that she has know rich, educated, handsome Darren Whitman since she was in pigtails and he was a feisty pre-teen is a moot point to Licia. However the three men in Licia life have a different set of gaols for her.

Following Licias' life from pigtails to graduate school, Ms Bolton left no aspect
untouched. I laughed with Licia when she licked out her tongue, cried with her and understood her fear.

Gwyneth wove old and new life styles together giving us a look into the different values of life. Taking us through families ups and downs as they all come to understand life is one big compromise.

If you want to learn more about the three men in Licia life read Ms Bolton's debut novel I'm Gonna Make You Love Me. I am looking forward to her July release If Only You Knew.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute little story!, January 9, 2009
This review is from: I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (Indigo) (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a cute story. It was kinda childish to me. I would have liked a more adult version of the story. I felt that it was written more for the teenage crowd than the adult. With that said, it was an ok read for me. Alicia got on my nerves!....Always eavesdropping and jumping to conclusions. She was a stubborn brat! I liked Flex and Sweet Dee's story in Sweet Sensation better. I did like the way the story ended. This was my second book by Gwyneth Bolton. I have ordered about 4 more and I hope they are geared towards an adult audience.
