Review

An excellent oral history tribute to Hunter S. Thompson GQ For those who like their literary entertainment with a little more snarl to it THE DAILY TELEGRAPH A wonderfully entertaining chronicle of Hunter's (life) International Herald Tribune --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Publisher

AMMO Books is pleased to announce its debut title: GONZO by famed American author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson. GONZO presents a rare look into the life of Thompson, whose groundbreaking style of "gonzo" journalism made him one of the greatest writers of his generation. Now, for the first time, his photographs and archives have been collected into a visual biography worthy of his literary legacy. With a heartfelt introduction by close friend Johnny Depp, GONZO captures a man whose life was as legendary as his writing.

AMMO Books presents this impressive limited edition title, featuring hundreds of personal photographs--many taken by Thompson himself and never before published. Accompanied by writing and memorabilia, this visual history gives insight into the literary icon's life. GONZO chronicles Thompson's numerous adventures, including his early days as a foreign correspondent in Puerto Rico, living in Big Sur in the sixties, time on the road with the Hell's Angels, running for Sheriff of Pitkin County in 1970, and many personal moments with friends and family throughout the years.

This one-of-a-kind book is the ultimate tribute to the Good Doctor, and a must-have for any Thompson fan. Lovingly edited and designed, and lavishly printed, this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. This is an exclusive offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide, destined to become a treasured part of your personal library.

This is a must have for any fan...

This is a reprint version - ignore all of the limited edition descriptions (fancy Gonzo box, around a box with numbered print) in below 2006 reviews from the exceptionally lucky...

This book came exactly how it's currently pictured ...and glorious in it's essence...

At first I was put off by the price. But the minute I opened the box that uncertainty disappeared. This is an amazing addition to my Thompson library and my library as a whole. The printing is limited to 3000 copies and I got # 2252. Not sure if they are going out in order but you might want to jump if you are toying with this dwindling opportunity. This is a book that will only gain in value over the years, a true collectors piece. The book comes in a cellophane sealed, hand numberer box. Inside that, the book is contained in a box of it's own. The book box is very sturdy and linen bound with the Gonzo dagger boldly stamped on the front. The book itself is print numbered on the rear cover.

When I ordered this book I did not know what to expect. I knew that it was a collection of Hunter S. Thompsons assorted junk - pictures, drawings, notes... I admit that I am a huge fan of Hunter's work and I read every single book out there. And this book you can't read really. There are several old letters photocopied in this book and that's basically it for the readable part. The pictures, however, are absolutely beauiful. They are arranged chronologically and if you have read some of the Thompson books you will recognize a lot of things you have read about. A little extra that really gave me goosebumps are the few original notepad sheets in this book. Some of the little papers which were written in Las Vegas in April 71 may not be easy to descipher but they deliver a feeling of style and gonzo that cannot be matched by anything printed in set-font words. I hoped for a little more content to be honest but as a collector and admirer of Thompsons work I am glad to have bought this!

The review for this stated, "..this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. ...offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide..." This was a gift for my wife: A huge Gonzo Fan, alomst of mythical proportions. Not too sure what happened to the box it was supposed to come in, or the Gallery-quality photgraph for that matter. Couldn't find anything indivually numbered except each page. Kinda like any book. However....Got her this and a Bukowski piece and Bukowski lays forgotten and she loves Gonzo. It is a beautiful book that inspires joy and laughter in someone who I know would have left me for Hunter in a heartbeat.

It is a limited numbered edition, housed in a boxed cover, itself housed in a protective, printed "gonzo" cardboard and Amazon will wrap it once more.
Considering that a standard, non large sized, edition of the book will be published in due course, you have to like the subject and know that you are paying the quality of the edition itself, otherwise wait for the standard edition.
Lovely pictures in great quality printing and a binding the edition deserves is what you pay for and what you get. You also get a separate printing which should be exclusive to this edition.
I do hope you got the point.
More a Christmas gift than a coffee table, unless you have on your table numbered editions which I don't do.

I must admit I was incredibly hesitant about this purchase and my finger hovered over the 'confirm' button for a few seconds before biting the bullet and clicking. As soon as this book arrived all of my fears were immediately washed away. This is presented so beautifully, even the plain brown box feels special. Along with the book, the electric blue presentation box also contains a numbered print from Hunters Big Sur days.

The book itself is incredible, extremely well presented and it carries high production values throughout. The intro by Johnny Depp is a great touch.

Its a must have for any HST fan, but also for those who can appreciate how good books can be.

Purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my boss and he LOVED it! He's a huge Hunter Thompson fan but hadn't seen the book yet since it was only out a couple months. The book is filled with an incredible collection of Thompson's personal photographs and excerpts from his books that take the reader on an emotional journey of his life. Thompson fans will not be disappointed!

This book is simply a must-have for fans of the Good Doctor. The pictures provide something of an intimacy between the reader/viewer and the truly extraordinary life of Hunter S. Thompson. (N.B.: What's truly rewarding is reading his anthologized letters--"The Proud Highway," etc.--while checking out all these photos.)

The book begins with a stark black spread with Thompson's should-be famous quote & question: "So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: Who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived, or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?" After the customary inclusion of the brilliant Thompson-composed news release relating his discharge from the Air Force, we're faced with a rather warm B&W spread featuring a young Hunter asleep with his head on his wristwatch'd arm, surrounded by paper cups, Schlitz cans and onlooking Press/Radio representatives, who at the time could never have known the abilities and future of the tired young man sleeping next to them One can only assume he was resting up ahead of time for all the great work he'd soon be doing. It really is a great way to kick off the game.

The pictures, which are all presented in a very nice and interesting way (from full-page and in color or B&W to tiny reproduced scans of a streaming set), are here and there headed by a few words from the Man Himself. And of course, we get at moments a glimpse of his writing, some of it early, unedited, profane and all of it gorgeously HST, just what we like. The detail of the photos is mesmerizing. The quality, I mean. And furthermore, this tremendous collection goes to show that Thompson had a great eye for photography. You won't find such a beautiful collection anywhere else.
