More About the Author

Writer, photographer and author Ben Corbett has spent the past fifteen years cultivating an original voice in American journalism. Contributing to magazines and newsweeklies from coast to coast, his byline and images have appeared in venues as far flung as VH1 and High Times, to Salon.com, Tattoo, Easyriders, Kirkus Reviews, Relix, Iron Horse, Crawdaddy! and many others. Corbett's award-winning current affairs book, "This is Cuba: An Outlaw Culture Survives" (Basic)--now in its sixth printing--was endorsed by two former ambassadors to Cuba as the best book written about modern life on the island. In 2001, Corbett became the first American photographer to join Cuba's official photography association since the 1959 revolution. He was also the first American reporter to cover Cuba's explosive body art scene, its outlaw motorcycle subculture, and its illicit underground drug trade. Primarily an alternative journalist and culture writer, Corbett maintains his standing as a human rights and environmental reporter, as well as a scholar of Latin American affairs and North American Indian issues. Most recently, Corbett contributed the biographical sketch for the Literary Edition of Hunter Thompson's visual biography, "Gonzo" (AMMO), which includes a foreword by Johnny Depp. You can also see one of Corbett's conversations with Thompson in the important anthology of interviews, "Ancient Gonzo Wisdom" (DaCapo). 5.0 out of 5 stars Thompson's history from behind his own camera lens, January 13, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
Most fans of the good Dr. Thompson know him from his words (or more unfortunately, from Johnny Depp's caricature in the Vegas film). Gonzo is a unique book that shows HST's prowess behind the camera lens, documenting his own life, work and experience. The book is organized in a loose chronology of his life, with related excerpts from his writing. From his service days on Eglin AFB in Florida to his time with Sandy at Big Sur and in the Caribbean to the Vegas era and on the '72 campaign trail, Thompson beautifully captured the large and small elements of the world around him. The most fascinating images are not of Thompson's public persona, but the private photos from his time in Puerto Rico, Woody Creek and Key West. HST used the camera to augment his memory; images of a hotel table filled with his odds and ends are as memorable as the more famous photos! The only glaring omissions are photos from the last two decades of his life; the book would be a more complete document if it included images of his entire life.

The 'literary edition' now available is in a smaller format than the original release, but retains the high-quality uncoated paper of the original run. The graphic design of the book is excellent, with vibrating color schemes as surreal as HST's world! I can't recommend it enough to fans of Dr. Thompson.

3.0 out of 5 stars A lil disappointed., November 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
okay, so i am a huge fan of hunter s. thompson, and i was waiting so bad for the delivery of this book. as soon as i came home i saw it wrapped up and i immediately started to tear it open. So yes, it was the book that i wanted, the only small problem was i was expecting the "LARGER" version of the book. (as in dimension wise)

i am a lil picky, but most definitely i will return it, due to the fact i did wanted the bigger book than the smaller one.

:(
