Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

AMMO Books is pleased to announce its debut title: GONZO by famed American author and journalist Hunter S. Thompson. GONZO presents a rare look into the life of Thompson, whose groundbreaking style of "gonzo" journalism made him one of the greatest writers of his generation. Now, for the first time, his photographs and archives have been collected into a visual biography worthy of his literary legacy. With a heartfelt introduction by close friend Johnny Depp, GONZO captures a man whose life was as legendary as his writing.

AMMO Books presents this impressive limited edition title, featuring hundreds of personal photographs--many taken by Thompson himself and never before published. Accompanied by writing and memorabilia, this visual history gives insight into the literary icon's life. GONZO chronicles Thompson's numerous adventures, including his early days as a foreign correspondent in Puerto Rico, living in Big Sur in the sixties, time on the road with the Hell's Angels, running for Sheriff of Pitkin County in 1970, and many personal moments with friends and family throughout the years.

This one-of-a-kind book is the ultimate tribute to the Good Doctor, and a must-have for any Thompson fan. Lovingly edited and designed, and lavishly printed, this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. This is an exclusive offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide, destined to become a treasured part of your personal library. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

About the Author

Hunter S. Thompson's books include Fear and Loathing in America, Screwjack, Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Proud Highway, Better Than Sex, The Rum Diary, and Kingdom of Fear. He was contributor to various national and international publications, including a weekly sports column for ESPN.com. Thompson was famous for his free-wheeling, intoxicant-fueled observations on politics and society in Rolling Stone. With wit and salty language, he created a public persona of a hard-drinking, gun-toting anti-authoritarian. He centered his reporting around his crazy behavior and called it "gonzo journalism."

Hunter S. Thompson died February 2005.

Steve Crist has edited and created numerous art and photography books including The Polaroid Book, Marilyn by Andre de Dienes, Jazzlife and Steve McQueen by William Claxton, and The Curse of Lono by Hunter S. Thompson and Ralph Steadman. In 2006, he created and published the internationally successful Gonzo by Hunter S. Thompson. Steve is the Publisher of AMMO Books, and is currently in production with Todd Oldham on Charley Harper - An Illustrated Life, and Lulu by Lulu de Kwiatkowski. He lives in Los Angeles.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have - Not the Limited Edition - Did You Catch It?, October 9, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
This is a must have for any fan...

This is a reprint version - ignore all of the limited edition descriptions (fancy Gonzo box, around a box with numbered print) in below 2006 reviews from the exceptionally lucky...

This book came exactly how it's currently pictured ...and glorious in it's essence...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doctor would be proud., December 21, 2006
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
At first I was put off by the price. But the minute I opened the box that uncertainty disappeared. This is an amazing addition to my Thompson library and my library as a whole. The printing is limited to 3000 copies and I got # 2252. Not sure if they are going out in order but you might want to jump if you are toying with this dwindling opportunity. This is a book that will only gain in value over the years, a true collectors piece. The book comes in a cellophane sealed, hand numberer box. Inside that, the book is contained in a box of it's own. The book box is very sturdy and linen bound with the Gonzo dagger boldly stamped on the front. The book itself is print numbered on the rear cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Box? Picture? Individually Numbered?, June 13, 2008
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
The review for this stated, "..this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. ...offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide..." This was a gift for my wife: A huge Gonzo Fan, alomst of mythical proportions. Not too sure what happened to the box it was supposed to come in, or the Gallery-quality photgraph for that matter. Couldn't find anything indivually numbered except each page. Kinda like any book. However....Got her this and a Bukowski piece and Bukowski lays forgotten and she loves Gonzo. It is a beautiful book that inspires joy and laughter in someone who I know would have left me for Hunter in a heartbeat.
