5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have - Not the Limited Edition - Did You Catch It?
This is a must have for any fan...

This is a reprint version - ignore all of the limited edition descriptions (fancy Gonzo box, around a box with numbered print) in below 2006 reviews from the exceptionally lucky...

This book came exactly how it's currently pictured ...and glorious in it's essence...

3.0 out of 5 stars Depending on what youare looking for...
This is either a treasure trove or an expensive dissapointment. It is essentially an enormous photoessay of periods of Dr. Thompson's life, reminiscent of the Life magazine photo collections. It is sparse in terms of text and explaination, leaving the photos to speak for themselves. It attempts to paint portraits of eras of his life, but if you are unfamiliar with these...

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doctor would be proud., December 21, 2006
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
At first I was put off by the price. But the minute I opened the box that uncertainty disappeared. This is an amazing addition to my Thompson library and my library as a whole. The printing is limited to 3000 copies and I got # 2252. Not sure if they are going out in order but you might want to jump if you are toying with this dwindling opportunity. This is a book that will only gain in value over the years, a true collectors piece. The book comes in a cellophane sealed, hand numberer box. Inside that, the book is contained in a box of it's own. The book box is very sturdy and linen bound with the Gonzo dagger boldly stamped on the front. The book itself is print numbered on the rear cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Box? Picture? Individually Numbered?, June 13, 2008
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
The review for this stated, "..this extraordinary package includes a specially designed box that contains the book and a limited edition gallery-quality photograph by Thompson. ...offering of only three thousand individually numbered copies available worldwide..." This was a gift for my wife: A huge Gonzo Fan, alomst of mythical proportions. Not too sure what happened to the box it was supposed to come in, or the Gallery-quality photgraph for that matter. Couldn't find anything indivually numbered except each page. Kinda like any book. However....Got her this and a Bukowski piece and Bukowski lays forgotten and she loves Gonzo. It is a beautiful book that inspires joy and laughter in someone who I know would have left me for Hunter in a heartbeat.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful images and a lifestyle reflected in pictures and notes, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
When I ordered this book I did not know what to expect. I knew that it was a collection of Hunter S. Thompsons assorted junk - pictures, drawings, notes... I admit that I am a huge fan of Hunter's work and I read every single book out there. And this book you can't read really. There are several old letters photocopied in this book and that's basically it for the readable part. The pictures, however, are absolutely beauiful. They are arranged chronologically and if you have read some of the Thompson books you will recognize a lot of things you have read about. A little extra that really gave me goosebumps are the few original notepad sheets in this book. Some of the little papers which were written in Las Vegas in April 71 may not be easy to descipher but they deliver a feeling of style and gonzo that cannot be matched by anything printed in set-font words. I hoped for a little more content to be honest but as a collector and admirer of Thompsons work I am glad to have bought this!

5.0 out of 5 stars if you don't think about five stars, you probably won't buy it, September 11, 2007
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
It is a limited numbered edition, housed in a boxed cover, itself housed in a protective, printed "gonzo" cardboard and Amazon will wrap it once more.
Considering that a standard, non large sized, edition of the book will be published in due course, you have to like the subject and know that you are paying the quality of the edition itself, otherwise wait for the standard edition.
Lovely pictures in great quality printing and a binding the edition deserves is what you pay for and what you get. You also get a separate printing which should be exclusive to this edition.
I do hope you got the point.
More a Christmas gift than a coffee table, unless you have on your table numbered editions which I don't do.

5.0 out of 5 stars No regrets, May 20, 2007
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
I must admit I was incredibly hesitant about this purchase and my finger hovered over the 'confirm' button for a few seconds before biting the bullet and clicking. As soon as this book arrived all of my fears were immediately washed away. This is presented so beautifully, even the plain brown box feels special. Along with the book, the electric blue presentation box also contains a numbered print from Hunters Big Sur days.
The book itself is incredible, extremely well presented and it carries high production values throughout. The intro by Johnny Depp is a great touch.
Its a must have for any HST fan, but also for those who can appreciate how good books can be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect/unique gift for Hunter Thompson fans!, February 13, 2008
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
Purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my boss and he LOVED it! He's a huge Hunter Thompson fan but hadn't seen the book yet since it was only out a couple months. The book is filled with an incredible collection of Thompson's personal photographs and excerpts from his books that take the reader on an emotional journey of his life. Thompson fans will not be disappointed!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, balanced review of his life, work and legacy, September 1, 2008

Great read. Illuminates both his genius and his jackassery. The many voices providing retrospectives create a vivid 360-degree view of what it was like to work and live with HST - the good, bad and the ugly. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully presented art worthy of HST!, December 10, 2007
This review is from: Gonzo (Hardcover)
This HUGE, breathtakingly beautiful collectors piece was SO much more than I expected or even hoped for! If you just want to add another HST book to your collection, buy the $40.00 reprint. It's the same book, just smaller, mass produced, and without the fancy package. But if you are a die-hard Thompson fan, spend the 400 bucks and treat yourself to the limited edition box set. You will not be disappointed.
