I decided to purchase several pouches of volcanic rocks from a couple different vendors to see if they are all the same and whether one has an advantage over the other. I tried both the "house odors" and "pet odors" varieties. The rocks from Amazon.com seem, in essence, to be the same as from the other store - [...] - except for a couple differences that are important to me. The rocks from [...] were packaged nicely, cleanly, and were easy to open. On the other hand, the rocks from this amazon.com vendor were packaged sloppily and arrived filthy with volcanic dust. Even though I was careful, the dust got all over the place. Also, the packages were difficult to open without leaving some of the plastic and paper label attached, so they were unattractive to have around the house. I ended up having to hide them behind furniture. Another good thing about the [...] rocks - the pouches each came with a nice, separate hook to make it easy to hang them. I had never purchased from [...] before and probably will not again (they have nothing else I want) but if you are looking into purchasing volcanic rocks, you may want to check them out. They cost more but I think it's worth it - I found that I was angry at myself for not buying all of them from there. (P.S. I have absolutely no affiliation with [...].)

I will come back to update my review after having used the rocks around the house for a while to see how effective their odor-absorbing ability is.

Update: amazon has blocked the name of the other online store, which is fine. You can probably find it on your own - it's a store that specializes in environmental "earth" products. Another good thing about it - they offer closet-sized versions of the pouches. Just remember - if you don't mind the mess and difficult packaging, the rocks in both products are essentially the same.

Update #2: I've had several of these packets around the house for over a week and have not noticed any difference. I thought that they may need to be "revived" so I put them all out in the sunlight for several hours, as they recommend. No improvement. I feel silly for buying so many of them at once instead of trying out one or two. I feel like I've thrown away my money. The odor I'm trying to get rid of is not even a powerful one - it's subtle. So you'd think it would be easty to remove it with the rocks. I'll leave them out in the hope that, in time, they will work, but I have to admit that I'm not optimistic about it.

My basement (1,000 sq ft) smelled like cat pee. I purchased 6 of these odor eliminators and placed them all over the basement. Within a week, there was not a whiff of cat pee to notice. This is the coolest product!

This thing does work. I have to keep my windows closed sometimes because of the dust from lawn mowers, traffic, and wind. This problem is especially bad in Southern California. Now when I leave the window closed in a room, and come home, there isn't a *musty* smell. I needed something to absorb moisture and odors in the ambient air. These rocks do not become wet quickly, but they do absorb moisture over a couple months. At least once a month, usually twice, I hang it up on a hook on the patio and the sun dries out the rocks. I put it underneath a dresser on top of a piece of tile. It could go right on the carpet, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you have a place in the closet where you can hang it or something you can set it on underneath a dresser out of site, that is ideal. I don't think electric air ionizers do anything. If you want something to "bleach" the air, then you should buy an electric ozone producer. The problem with ozone machines is that ozone is toxic to living organisms (humans and pets) at relatively high concentractions and there's no way to monitor the ozone levels in your house accurately. For the price, you can't go wrong. They sell them at Fry's electronics, which is how I learned about the product.

You won't need this if you live in Florida and have constant Air conditioning.

I purchased this product since we have a new kitten in the house. We placed three bags near her litter box, and to our dismay, there is no noticeable difference in the odor. I placed all three bags in the sun for one full day to recharge, however, there was no change in the result.

I would like to know what product would really work to eliminate the odor. Baking soda has worked best so far with marginal results.

i had a smelly closet, bought this item based on reviews and it does not work. Followed tha instructions in the package left it in the closet for 16 hours as suggested and the closet its as stinky as before.....should haave know better. Dont waste your money its does not work.

We had a mouse die in our wall. The smell was unbearable. I put the "Gonzo Odor Eliminator" next to the spot where the smell was the strongest and within 24 hrs the smell had lessened. In 48 it was barely noticeable!

I love this product so much, I had to come write about it. I had a mouse die in my wall, with Thanksgiving coming I'm in a panic, I was searching the internet for products that might help eliminate the smell. I ended up ordering an expensive item online, only to find this at a local "big box hardware store". I picked it up because it was inexpensive and worth a try. I placed 2 bags in the room and within 4 hours there was a noticeable difference in the room's odor. That was yesterday, today when I went out and came back home, I took a deep breath and couldn't smell any offensive odor. I am so happy I found this product...it is worth every penny!!!

Gonzo really does eliminate the odor. It does not mask it or try to cover it up with another scent. I moved into a new apartment and there was a very strong but not unpleasant odor. I thought it might be from the new carpet, paint and dry cleaned drapes so I waited hoping it would disappear. Needless to say, the odor did not go away nor did it diminish, so I decided to do something about it. Honestly the reviews about Gonzo here and on their site were so good they were pretty hard to believe. But after trying Gonzo, I agree, absolutely the best. I'm buying another one for my car!

I put one bag under my kitchen sink and the other under my bathroom sink to eliminate the faint musty smell. It worked, and I'm looking to buy a couple more to put in my other bathroom.
