Goldie the big sister lists all the things that she can do that Nicholas her baby brother cannot.
Goldie the big sister lists all the things that she can do that Nicholas her baby brother cannot.
PreS-Gr 2-Goldie speaks right to children, informing them of all of her baby brother's shortcomings. Nicholas can't make beautiful pictures, dress himself, or read books. Contrary to her narrative, the illustrations reveal that the siblings actually have quite a bit in common. For instance, when Goldie announces that Nicholas cannot use a fork and spoon and therefore is a messy eater, the illustrations show a very untidy little girl as she slurps spaghetti and spills her milk. Listeners will enjoy poring over the pictures and discovering the similarities. The narrative is conversational and engaging. The clever design sets large print and bright, cartoon art against a clean white background. Palatini captures the activity of the narrative through the energetic illustrations, which have a life all their own. The humor is right on target for young children, who will howl with laughter when they realize the inevitable outcome of Nicholas's snack of a blue crayon. In the spirit of Kevin Henkes's "Lilly," Goldie is an endearing protagonist with plenty of chutzpah.-Shawn Brommer, Southern Tier Library System, Painted Post, NY

Goldie is a Keeper!,

This review is from: Good As Goldie (Hardcover)
This book had me and my 2-year old daughter giggling throughout at Goldie and her unique look at life with a baby brother. It came home with us in a stack of library books, but it's soon to be in our permanent collection of favorites!

Worth its weight in gold!,

This review is from: Good As Goldie (Hardcover)
Goldie is destined to be a classic! She's a charming and independent preschooler with strong ideas on how much more mature she is than her younger brother. But the energetic and quirky illustrations suggest that there's more to the story than Goldie's perception of it. Little kids will love laughing at Goldie and her little brother and will enjoy feeling just slightly superior. This is one you'll read again and again and enjoy it each and every time.

Squelch New Baby Jealousy,
By
This review is from: Good As Goldie (Hardcover)
This book explores sibling rivalry between a toddler and her baby brother. As a mother of a 2 year old and 4 month old, I know what it's like to see your child regress because of the arrival of a new baby. This book reminds the child of all the neat things that they can do that the baby can't. We changed the names of the characters in the book to reflect our family...my daughter got a big kick out of that (she also kind of looks like Goldie!). We loved this book and I'd recommend it to any newly "expanded" family.
