OK Bounces and Misguided Lies,
By Peter K. O'Connell (Buffalo, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Bounces & Bad Lies (Hardcover)
Ben Wright's -Good Bounces and Bad Lies- is a humourous, fun and fairly light read featuring Mr. Wright's journalistic and personal travels through golf and broadcasting's recent history. For those readers looking for behind-the-scenes insight into famous people (from golf and entertainment), rarely told broadcasting stories and some engaging (though seemingly sad) stories of a lot of rowdy drinking, you'll enjoy this book. Those who remember Wright's verbal skills on television will enjoy imagining his voice in their heads as they read his words. It's very entertaining.

If you love golf, you will love this book,
This review is from: Good Bounces & Bad Lies (Hardcover)
I am a fan of Mr. Wright's and I now have a deeper appreciation of what goes on behind those infamous telecasts. The sections on the Masters and the Ryder Cup shows all of us what it means to play for God and Country. Thanks for the great book Ben.

Ben Wright has some pretty funny tales in this book. You have to have the proper prespective to really like it though. Sure Ben is an idiot but his stories are mighty funny - especially when you picture him telling it with his thick accent.

Golf stories, told like only Mr. Wright could tell!,
By Richard A. Clarke (rclarke246@aol.com) (Phoenix, Maryland) - See all my reviews

An easy and interesting read. Mr. Wright has a unique and amusing style of delivery that we golf fans have been deprived for four long years. As I read his book, with great interest, I could actually hear his distinguished voice telling me the stories! What's more, the various recounted incidents and events, mostly involving PGA Tour players and media celebrities, were as interesting as they were amusing.A must read for (at least) the golf nut,

I've never read a golf book loaded with so many great stories. I'm just disappointed it had to end. I'm glad Ben Wright can't announce anymore if it means he'll provide us with his written insight and stories. They are as good as any you will ever hear. Of course, having him back in the book and writing would be the best!

bring Ben back please,
By Ronald Camarata (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Bounces & Bad Lies (Hardcover)
I emplore CBS to bring Ben back to its broadcasts so he won't have time to write any more books. This is about as exciting as English food. If you want to read or send your favorite golfer some reading materials there are a lot of other good ones available such as The Masters, A GOOD WALK SPOILED & THE MAJORS. Leave this one alone.

Item quality & content was as promised and delivered timely. The book content was OK and had interesting vignettes, but the sequence and organization of the stories could have been better. <Dan>

This was a surprisingly-interesting book. I guess I hadn't heard golf commentator Ben Wright in so long that I'd forgotten about his great sense of humor. What I never knew was what a wild man he was (still is?).
The often-baldy tales of Ben and his CBS partners will make you laugh and cringe at times....mostly laugh. He paints himself as a heavy drinker, comedian, golf historian, a pretty good player and an interesting man to be around.....unless he's drunk. I have no doubt all of that isn't true. While you'll get a lot of laughs, you'll also be a little shocked at some things, and very annoyed at a few people who ruined his broadcasting career. In all, there are tons of golf stories and overall, the book is a fun read and hard to put down.

Good bounces, Bad read,

Wright's tales are stupendous, but to the point of being absurd. This is one of the few books in years that I finally just put down. He defects from the army to watch Hogan, his house is reduced to rubble but he and his sister miraculously survive; his overzealous buddy grabs a waiter and pulls him outside to beat him senseless...sheesh. I liked Wright as a commentator but leave this book on the shelf.

Wright's book basically, after he gets through some obligatory stories about golf in England when he was young, is a tell all about most of the peole he has worked with at CBS Sports. If it is not a tell all, it will do 'til one comes around. Most of the problem is with alcohol...we hear of interventions, wild partys, stupid episodes of behavior...yet through it all...even after an intervention which sent him to Betty Ford...one of the staff told him before he left that he was not an alcoholic but an abuser of alcohol. What that distinction is remains lost to me but was understood by Ben. No matter. You wonder how CBS managed to produce a cohesive telecast of the Masters or any other tournament they were assigned to based on Ben's recollections. He also ran into some world travelers that he thought behaved badly. It is a "tell all" from one who is still in the dog house for telling all about his opinion of women's golf and the difference betwen the men's game and theirs. No matter that he had that just right,,,he was PC'd out and the world of golf broadcasting is the worse for it. I miss him behind the microphone, but the book goes a bit long.
