Book Description

May 27, 1998
Virgil Caudill has never gone looking for trouble, but this time he's got no choice -- his hell-raising brother Boyd has been murdered. Everyone knows who did it, and in the hills of Kentucky, tradition won't let a murder go unavenged. No matter which way he chooses, Virgil will lose.

The Good Brother, Chris Offutt's finely crafted first novel, is the story of Virgil's struggle to find his real self in the wake of an impossible choice. Traversing the American landscape from the hollows of Eastern Kentucky to the plains of Montana, Offutt explores the hunger for belonging that drives our most passionate beliefs, and in the process shows himself to be one of our most powerful storytellers.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The first half of Offutt's first novel is set in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky, where Virgil Caudill is balking at seeking revenge against the killer of his wayward brother Boyd. Hoping to break the cycle of violence, Virgil heads west and is catapulted with the reader into the very different landscape of Montana. Here Virgil changes his name and discovers a sense of loving community, but soon he finds himself amidst a militia group about to battle the U.S. government. Although the book is beautifully written, the scenes set in Montana are less compelling than those set in Kentucky, and Offutt tries in vain to bridge the two landscapes. From Kirkus Reviews

Strong, grim, haunting portrait of a man inescapably marked by an act of violence, in a first novel by the author of the memoir The Same River Twice (1993). Virgil, a bright, restless, laconic young man, finds himself doubly burdened when his wild older brother Boyd is murdered. The hell-raising Boyd has been an essential part of Virgil's life, and Virgil's grief is pressing and deep. And, because life in his isolated corner of Kentucky has not been much altered by modern times, his family, his friends, and even the local sheriff expect Virgil to avenge Boyd's death by killing the local rough suspected of the deed. Reluctantly, and with growing despair, Virgil plots to do so. Afterward, he flees west, and the bulk of the novel is taken up with his life in the backwoods of Montana. The skills evident in Offutt's earlier writing, including his pitch-perfect rendition of the vivid, terse, often droll character of the spoken word, and his talent for vigorously, precisely describing rural blue-collar culture, its trailer courts and bars, struggling factories and backroad settlements, are once again on display. Virgil expects that Montana will offer him a chance to hide until he can puzzle out what to do. But the relatives of the man he murdered come searching for him, and, through yet another act of violence, he inadvertently falls in with modern militiamen who've declared war on the US government. Virgil, drawn to the strong, independent sister of one of the group's members, finds that, no matter how he tries, violence has become an inescapable part of his life. The apocalyptic ending is bloody, sad, and convincing. As a portrait of a good man's life shattered by violence, and as a meditation on the persistent attraction of violence in American society, Offutt's first fiction is persuasive, original, and disturbing. The work of a sizable talent. (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Good Author writes great novel, April 16, 2002

This review is from: The Good Brother (Hardcover)
Chris Offutt's "The Good Brother" tells the story of Virgil Caudhill's inescapable fate after his brother Boyd is murdered. Offutt's beautiful but terrible tale perfectly demonstrates the futility of revenge, and the unintended but inevitable consequences that flow from retribution. This moving novel showcases Offutt's ability for character development and perfect dialogue with a true "page-turner" plot. While some reviewers are critical of the novel's turn once Virgil reaches Montana, I think they are missing the point. Offutt has done a magnificent job of conveying Virgil's isolation and disconnect with the world once he's removed from his native Kentucky. It is a telling moment when Virgil's happiest time in Montana occurs as he bonds with his would-be assassin, a native Kentuckian. This Southern boy can tell you, that moment was real.
Read this book. Offutt is a treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pinpoint accurate portrait of two American sub-cultures., July 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: The Good Brother (Hardcover)
As the brother of the author, I could be said to
be somewhat biased about his book, The Good
Brother. On the other hand, I think I can safely
claim that nobody else will understand it better.
We grew up in Eastern Kentucky, where the first
half of this book is set, and nobody has ever bestowed a more accurate description of modern life in the hills from an inside perspective. Every detail was carefully crafted and derived from real events and actual people. If you have ever lived in or near the Appalachian hills, you will see reflections of your memories, drawn in a stark, cutting, way. If you have not, then this book will show you the dark side of Appalachia, including the poverty, the simple joys, and the hopelessness of a culture that has been transformed from being based on pride to being based on welfare.

Of course, the point of the book is not about Eastern Kentucky culture, but about the current anti-government culture. The book expresses the positive side of this movement, the allure of the extremists, and makes you understand how this movement has been able to grow from origins in Vietnam and the cold war. These essential points are presented as sidepoints to a moving story about a dead man and his good brother.

4.0 out of 5 stars Gripping Story of Family Ties and Obligations, January 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Good Brother (Hardcover)
This is a compelling story of the pain and regret one can have by trying to fulfull the obligations placed upon us by family responsibilities. It also gives great insight into the militia movement in America. The author does a tremendous job of explaining the sacrifice and alienation that can occur by trying to live up to other people's expectations and not following our own feelings. I greatly enjoyed this book and will read others by this author.
