About the Author

More About the Author

I grew up in a very narrow-minded, strictly Catholic village in Southern Germany where I would walk barefoot on summer evenings to fetch milk from a nearby farm.
Several years later I married a U.S. soldier who was stationed near my hometown and moved to New Jersey with him, less than an hour from New York City. On my way to a writers' conference early one morning I had breakfast in the little park outside the hotel on Broadway and 32nd Street, and there was this little old man sitting at one of the tables. He looked so much like a New Yorker and my childhood ideal of the American people. He was just sitting there with his Yankees jacket and a cup of coffee, reading the newspaper, and I spontaneously took his picture before the day unfolded and swallowed him up.
Many times I find that my stories connect with something deep inside me from way back then, and whenever I lose confidence in my writing, I think back to the barefooted little girl, and how far she had come.
If you write a teen novel that parents approve of and then they tell their kids to read it, they won't. I write for teens, truthfully, not sugar-coated, which means I show them what can happen when you use drugs or have unprotected sex. The teenage years mean sex and drama, everything else is unrealistic.
If you're an adult reading this, give the kids a break. I would not want to be sixteen again.
Your kids may not be all you dreamed of, but you're not all your parents dreamed of, either.

I live in New Jersey with my husband and daughter. You can reach me at www.utaburke.com and utaburke@gmail.com.

It really will give you a insight and it shows the true stories and nothing you would see on tv.

This book shares personal stories about life in America from the perspectives of German women who have moved here because of husbands, career choices, or simply adventure. As the daughter of a German woman in America, I've grown up with a dual identity and these stories resonate on so many levels. Written mostly in German with some English (and a mash up of the two called "Denglish" or "Germisch") the book literally keeps you in the state that these women find themselves in: German by birth, American by circumstance, and forging a new identity as German Girls Living in America.

This is a great collection of stories of German girls experiencing the American Way of Life. Anybody who plans to move to the US should read them. Very authentic.

I am one of the GGLIA :) when we all responded to Uta's questions it showed how differnt our expirences have been and point of views. But it also shows how though we all had to be the struggles we have had over the years and still go through. There were times in the book I laughed so hard I was crying and could hardly talk to tell my boyfriend what was so funny. And other times there were heart warming and though stories to read were I need my box of tissue handy. We all wrote it together it's stories from many woman that came into this country and Uta did a wonderful job putting together this way. I bought the book as soon as it came out bought the kindle version for my son and will get it in the kindle version for myself now too :)

WOW, what a book. I am also one of the girls of GGLIA , which Uta describes in her book. I had my kleenex box ready to read this book of a life that you have to experience to know. But i have to say that Uta put it very nicely together for everybody to understand what we girls are up against and with it. It made me feel, not being alone in this world to feel the way I do and it further gives me the strength to go thru days that are not all that. I hope there will be a second book :)
