Editorial Reviews

Review

"[Dr. Kane] retains the rare ability to communicate in a jargon-free way that resonates with lay people...I find his advice accessible, sensible, never sugar-coated and-perhaps most important-a particular comfort at times when we feel ignorant, helpless and overwhelmed. I can think of no better balm for the growing number of family care-givers than the admission, by a renowned expert in the field, that this is really hard stuff for everyone."
-Jane Gross, New York Times

"Dr. Kane is not just one of the world's foremost authorities in geriatric medicine and long-term care, he is also a passionate advocate for the ill-met needs of people facing the real and difficult realities of an aging society...This book combines a kind of pilot's check list for families entering unchartered territory, but it also steers them with a steady hand toward a place of dignity, and what comforts the world allows in their time of need."
-Ted C. Fishman, journalist (National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, and others)

"No one in America knows more about aging than Dr. Robert Kane-not only the scientific underpinnings of what causes it and how to responsibly stave it off-but more importantly, how to address its inevitability. This book will come as indispensble manual for anyone with a parent or grandparent approaching the Act III in life."
-Dan Buettner, author of The Blue Zones --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Talk about wonderful advice for someone or for a family facing the need to care for a loved one.
Everything from how to be an advocate, how to not take away all independence for the loved one, insurance options, legal necessities, and even a 9 question "test" to see if you would make a good caregiver.

This should be required reading for anyone facing this situation.

I found this book to be very helpful. It has comprehensive, but easy to read section on almost every area related to caregiving and transitions in care for older adults. I am a researcher in the field of aging and I have used it a number of times already (including to guide my decision whether to purchase long-term care insurance). However, I think this book would be most useful for those who have little exposure to the long-term care system (including medical system in general) and who need to navigate it for themselves or their family members. I plan to purchase it for my in-laws and would highly recommend it for others.

Dr. Kane has done the impossible. He has written a full resource guide that is interesting and really helpful.

I am an elder law attorney. My clients and their families ask me the tough questions every day. I do not always
have an answer for them but now I have a place to send them. They can now get easy to understand guidance
on how to work with the hospital, choices in long term care, the importance of developing patience...

It is a really valuable book. It will be a comfort knowing that answers are close at hand.

This book literally saved my life. I've now given it to one of my brothers to read, he's had it 2 weeks and is devouring it. Another friend has bought herself one. If there is any way, any and all "caregivers" and their families could know about this book, it would save so much stress and pain. My mother, who we are "caregiving" is also reading it, to understand how I feel, and how some of her demands affect us. It is literally "The Bible" of Caregiving.

Pls.let Dr. Robert L. Kane, author, know how much a book like this was needed, and he is probably saving some lives. I thank God I saw it.

This book is perfect for anyone who is wondering what they might need to do as a caregiver, or who is in the middle of caregiving, or who wants to talk to an aging relative about what they will want. My husband and I are wondering how to approach our parents to talk about their wishes, and this book gives us suggestions not only for the things we need to think about with them but also the things we need to think about in working with our siblings. Dr. Kane gives many practical, specific examples of what will be required that can help facilitate conversations among family members. He also offers support and concrete suggestions for those who are in the midst of caregiving. I highly recommend this book.

Being a first time Mother-in-law caregiver with little notice, this book was/is extremely realistic and yet compassionate for all involved in the journey of elderly care giving.

This is an easy to read, practical guide on the role of the caregiver. It is filled with straightforward suggestions that are relatively simple to apply. The chapter on handling hospitals is especially useful. I would reccomend the book to nearly everyone who has a relationship with an aging parent or friend.
