Editorial Reviews

Eggs Over Easy had a huge influence on many British bands of the period, especially Brinsley Schwarz. According to the Brinsley's Nick Lowe, the Eggs had over 100 great songs at their fingertips. Just before they split, Eggs Over Easy recorded their lone album, Good 'n' Cheap, in 1972. This album, produced by Link Wray and the Eggs, is now thought of as a classic. It is now reissued here with 4 bonus tracks, supplied by the band. The accompanying 16 page CD booklet includes extensive liner notes, plus an additional note by Loudon Wainwright. Also, full lyrics to every track, rare photographs & reproductions of the original LP sleeve.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Band Changed The Course Of Rock 'N' Roll History, March 17, 2003
By
This review is from: Good 'n' Cheap (Audio CD)
I'm pleasantly surprised to see that this wonderful 1972 album is again available. I actually bought this Japanese-import CD reissue a few years ago, but had not seen nor heard of it since. So, how did Eggs Over Easy, an obscure Marin County, California band, "change the course of rock 'n' roll history"? Well, the story goes something like this: In 1970, Eggs Over Easy was sent by their record label to London to record their debut album. However, problems ensued and the band found themselves killing a few months in England waiting for the record label issues to be resolved, during which time they played a series of gigs at a London pub called the Tally Ho. At the time, English rock 'n' roll bands did not consider playing the pubs to be a viable career move, but Eggs Over Easy were so good, and the gigs became so popular, that soon other pubs were booking the obscure Marin County band, and they were developing some notable fans. Principal among these were the members of the band Brinsley Schwarz, who followed the lead of their new American friends and began playing the same pubs, getting a lot of attention in the process. Soon other bands were jumping on the bandwagon. First came Bees Make Honey and Ducks Deluxe, then Dr. Feelgood, Kilburn and the High Roads, Chili Willi And The Red Hot Peppers, Kursaal Flyers, Ace, The 101ers, Flip City, and many others. And although Eggs Over Easy returned to the states in late 1971, the pub rock scene they spawned continued to thrive in London until the mid-70's. By that time many of the original pub-rock bands were falling apart due to frustration over weak record sales, but several members of these bands subsequently went on to much greater fame, including Nick Lowe, The Rumour (of Graham Parker and the Rumour), Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, Paul Carrack, and Joe Strummer of the Clash. Even Huey Lewis, of all people, got his start in the pub rock scene, with the band Clover. And the circuit of pubs that began featuring live music to capitalize on the pub rock craze became the breeding grounds for the next stage - the punk rock bands, including the Sex Pistols, The Damned, etc, that really turned rock 'n' roll music on it's head. So Eggs Over Easy started the whole thing, but are they any good? Well, I think this album is great. Eggs Over Easy played roots rock before anyone ever thought to call it that. They were undoubtedly heavily influenced by The Band, and although I love all The Band's albums, I think this album has them all beat. My favorite track is "Henry Morgan", about the notorious pirate. Other standouts include "Face Down In The Meadow", "Song Is Born Of Riff And Tongue", and "Pistol On A Shelf". By the way, for the serious collectors out there, there was also one other Eggs Over Easy album, although hardly anyone seems to know about it. It's called "Fear Of Frying", it came out on "Squish Records", the LP does not list a date so I'm not sure if it is an earlier or later release than "Good And Cheap". It's not even listed on the All Music Guide. I finally tracked down a copy of it last month after years of trying, and it was worth the effort. Maybe not quite as good as "Good And Cheap", but not far off.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great album, March 18, 2007
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Good N Cheap (Audio CD)
Eggs Over Easy was a pub rock band from the early '70s. Their only album was Good 'n' cheap, a country rock album produced by Link Wray and the Eggs. It was released in 1972. The only song on it that appears on another album is "The Factory", a hard rock song that is one of the best songs on the album. There are other great songs on the album including Austin de Lone's "Party Party" and Brien Hopkins' "Henry Morgan". Also Jack O'Hara's "Arkansas". This album sounds like an old favorite the first time you hear it.
