Amazon.com Review
Beyond the controversy and the politics, the decision to abort or continue a pregnancy is an excruciating choice, one each woman makes privately. In her excellent, evenhanded, and supportive book,
In Good Conscience, Anna Runkle provides the information every woman needs to make her decision. Runkle, a consultant for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, provides information about what to do as soon as you learn you are pregnant, what happens during an abortion, historical and political information about abortion and abortion laws, advice on avoiding the false advertising promoted by antiabortion groups, specific questions to ask a provider, and suggestions on how to find the support you need. Worksheets aid in making the decision, as do the many stories of women who have made the choice--one way or the other.
In Good Conscience, is not a proabortion book, in fact, the last third of the book focuses on options for women who decide to continue their pregnancies. "Does this book push any one decision?" Runkle writes, "Absolutely not! This book is pro-choice, which means it supports you no matter what you decide."

With all that is said and written about abortion, no one addresses the individual woman with an unintended pregnancy who must decide how to handle it. She may face pressure from family, friends, religious advisors, and the baby's father, but the decision is hers. Runkle, a pregnancy counselor and consultant to Planned Parenthood, has written a practical and compassionate guide to help a woman choose the best solution for herself and support her throughout the process. Runkle discusses abortion, single parenting, and adoption, and provides a framework with worksheets for decision making and resources for each option. There is also a chapter for men explaining their rights and responsibilities. Although guides such as The New Our Bodies, Ourselves (Touchstone: S. & S., 1996) provide greater medical and legal detail, this book is unique in addressing a woman's decision-making needs on an individual level. Despite the disadvantage of the fill-in-the blank worksheets, this small book fills a major need. Highly recommended for all collections.?Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., CA
