Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Most Americans are comfortable in the belief that if they don't commit a crime, they have no risk of going to jail. Unfortunately, that's not always the way things are.

In addition to writing a compelling novel, Mr. Weinstein has put forth a wakeup call about a problem which plagues the American criminal justice system. While most prosecutors are honest and try to afford all defendants the fair trial to which they are entitled, far too many prosecutors fail to uphold this sacred obligation.

Most often, those prosecutors who cheat to get a conviction do so by suppressing evidence that goes against their case, evidence that would produce `reasonable doubt' in a juror's mind. Sometimes, they even conspire to make up evidence which alleges guilt, for instance by planting a "stoolie" who will then testify about admissions by the defendant which never happened.

Don't believe it? Think it can't happen in America, the land of justice for all?

Consider these damning reports by very credible organizations ...

* The Chicago Tribune reported that 381 murder convictions were reversed because of police or prosecutorial misconduct. * Columbia Law School documented "chronic prosecutorial suppression of evidence of innocence." * Barry Scheck et al (in Actual Innocence: When Justice Goes Wrong and How to Make it Right ) report numerous cases of prosecutorial misconduct, usually by suppression of evidence that would have proven innocence. * The book In Spite Of Innocence: Erroneous Convictions in Capital Cases , published by Northeastern University Press, cites 400 wrongful convictions. * The heart-wrenching play The Exonerated presents the true stories, in their own words, of seven persons who were wrongfully convicted

How likely is it there are many more such cases that have never come to significant public attention? Is it possible that what we do know is but the tip of the iceberg?

When you have read A Good Conviction, you will know that wrongful prosecution could happen to anyone. It could happen to you.

From the Author

I'm thrilled that early readers have been so taken with the characters, emotion, and significance of my story. Here's what some said as they were reading a pre-publication serialized version of A Good Conviction. * The stark contrast between Joshua Blake's previous life and the brutal reality of Sing Sing prison is chilling. * What if that were me? * Your characters have engaged me. * Once I begin reading, I can't put it down until the final word of each segment. * I abhor ADA Claiborne. * I feel so bad for Josh. * I'm gripped by the story's reality and intensity. * What's scary about Josh's situation is that it's entirely plausible.

* I feel I'm in New York with Josh! * The courtroom scene moved quickly in a compelling manner. * My other emails can wait, the book I was reading can wait, I just want to read your story. * It's scary to think how many like Josh are trapped in our legal system.. * Quick, send me Segment 2. I'm on the edge of my seat. * The tension is increasing. Send me Segment 8. * My heart is breaking for this kid, but I'm ready for more. I hope you enjoy your read as much as these readers did. Please let me know. LEW WEINSTEIN

More About the Author

I became an author during the latter part of a long career in management. My three novels tell the stories of injustices perpetrated by people in power - the Catholic Church, prosecutors who abuse their power, and the FBI.

In my first novel, THE HERETIC, I tell the story of a family of secret Jews seeking to survive the persecution of the Church, in 15th century Spain on the eve of the Inquisition. I explore the horror of Christian anti-Judaism as two generations of Jews struggle to preserve their family and their Jewish heritage. I did over 70 appearances at Jewish book fairs and synagogues, and still do book clubs, sometimes by phone from France.

My second novel, A GOOD CONVICTION, is about a young man who wakes up in Sing Sing prison, convicted of a murder in New York's Central Park which he did not commit. It gets even worse when he begins to understand that the prosecutor knew he was innocent. Prosecutorial abuse, which happens all too often, is a continuing plague on the American justice system. If it happens to you, and it well could, how do you survive in prison? How do you maintain hope that you can someday get back the life that has been stolen from you? Who will help you?

My third novel, CASE CLOSED, happened almost by accident.

In 2001, just after 9-11, letters laced with lethal anthrax were mailed across America; 5 people died, the country was thrown into panic. In 2008, the FBI finally announced that Dr. Bruce Ivins, a government scientist working at USAMRIID, was the sole perpetrator of the anthrax attacks. Dr. Ivins, however, was conveniently dead, allegedly of suicide, just 8 days before the FBI announcement, thus relieving the FBI of the obligation of having to prove its case in court, under oath.

The FBI said it was closing the case. I said they weren't, and I imagined in CASE CLOSED a fictional scenario to explain why the FBI had failed to solve the case. I asked two fundamental questions which are, at this writing, still unanswered ...

1. Who benefited from the FBI's failure to solve the case?

2. Who had the power to divert the FBI from the truth?

CASE CLOSED's answers to those questions leads into terrifying corruption at the very highest levels of the U.S. government.

I started a blog to promote CASE CLOSED, and as soon as I began posting material about the real anthrax case, the blog was flooded by many people who share my view that the FBI did not solve the case and by a few who support the FBI. If you're interested in this case, you will find the discussion fascinating ... (www.caseclosedbylewweinstein.wordpress.com)

At the time of the FBI's 2008 announcement, I was well into a sequel to THE HERETIC, set in the Renaissance Florence of Lorenzo de Medici. I am now getting back to that work, which I hope to have completed sometime in 2010.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible story, May 30, 2007
This review is from: A Good Conviction (Paperback)
This gripping story demonstrates how one's life can take a 180 degree turn in a moment. Innocent actions can be misinterpreted and unfortunate consequences result. Weinstein is a great story teller and this is a very well crafted story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finished the book months ago - still on my mind ........, May 30, 2007
This review is from: A Good Conviction (Paperback)
The characters and their emotions were so vividly portrayed that I still think about them as if I knew them. Lovers of New York City will walk the streets of the city and visualize "A Good Conviction" happening. You will walk past a certain news-stand and wonder if the owner remembers Josh. When you read a book that you don't want to end....that is a good book. "A Good Conviction" is a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love legal mysteries, May 29, 2007

This review is from: A Good Conviction (Paperback)
This is a "page turner" and I loved every minute of it. This author avoids the common fault I find with many mysteries: not having a good ending that leaves you satisfied. The main character is entirely believable and his circumstances are chilling: something that could happen to any one of us. The research behind this book and the author's familiarity with legal procedures (which are not hard to follow in the book) are evident.
