5.0 out of 5 stars Best Unheard Band of the Decade, October 17, 1999
By A Customer

This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
About three months ago I was given Over the Rhine's "Darkest night of the Year" and was thoroughly impressed. That inspired me to look for more of their material and brought me to this album among others. This album flows with beauty and character. I find myself looking at their style and trying to compare it to other quality bands such as Cowboy Junkies, Renaissance, and at times Velvet Underground, but realize that they are on a level uniquely their own. Great musicianship and a Diva's voice bring the listener perhaps the most interesting band of the Decade. Sit back and enjoy quality music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, August 31, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
Probably the best birthday present that anybody has ever got for me.

People said that it sent shivers down their spine, that and tears in my eyes.

It just blew me away.

If you love anybody then buy it for them, they will never forget you.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the decade, August 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
This album blew me away upon my first listen and continues to give me goosebumps. "Latter Days" is simply one of the greatest songs ever recorded. "Go Down Easy," "Etcetera,Whatever," and "Poughkeepsie" are all classic songs as well. Karen Bergquist makes full use of her voice, a voice that is touched by God. The arrangments are simple and beautiful and every song has a unique feel. This band is amazing. I rank this up there with The Innocence Mission's "Glow" and U2's "Achtung Baby" as one my favorite albums. If you are reading this and have not heard this band, GET THIS ALBUM!

5.0 out of 5 stars Push PLAY, Breathe deeply and Absorb., August 14, 1999

This album made me wish that I could sit the world down all at once and play it for them front to back.

How many albums do you own that can be played note for note from front to back? Not many huh? Buy this one to add to that very small list.

So much more to say than what's been said in the above reviews however, so little time tonight. I'll skip the in-depths and simply say:

If you want to hear a woman's voice who has been blessed by the hand of God... a voice so angelic...

if you want to hear lyrics fueled by the pen of a genius thankfully for us trapped by passion... all sorrounded by perfect accompaniment...

if you want to know that there is music out here that surpasses ANY of what you've heard on the radio in at least five years...

just get it!

Oh if you only knew what a critic I was of music then you would understand just how good Over The Rhine must be for me to travel to see them five times!

Brilliant, Gifted, Blessed, Timeless, Classic. A masterpiece. This is not an overstatement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Correct Track Listing for an Amazing album, January 18, 2007
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
Anyone looking at this cd probably knows how phenomenal it is so I will not go on reiterating what everyone else has said. This is mainly to put the correct track listing for this cd as Amazon has listed the tracks for the re-release version. So the correct track listing is:

1. Later Days
2. All I Need Is Everything
3. Etcetera Whatever
4. I Will Not Eat the Darkness
5. Faithfully Dangerous
6. The Seashore
7. Everyman's Daughter
8. A Gospel Number
9. Poughkeepsie
10. Willoughtby
11. Jack's Valentine
12. Happy To Be So
13. Go Down Easy

5.0 out of 5 stars Which Part of this will leave a scar?, September 14, 2000
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
This album will leave a scar for life. An elegant, melodic, and intelligent album which, as another reviewer noted, is so finely crafted that it deserves to be and should be played from beginning to end. When it ends, you will crave more.

I first heard of Over the Rhine when they opened for the Cowboy Junkies in 1998 (I believe), and I was mesmerized. An excellent band to see live, the album surpasses that. Over the Rhine came through Seattle again once in the time since and I am an even bigger fan, adamant that this band is one band you have probably never heard of but NEED to. This year (2000) two members of Over the Rhine went on tour with the Cowboy Junkies and joined the Junkies' always large and amusing onstage ensemble.

"Lord knows we learned the hard way all about healthy apathy... I use these words pretty loosely..." vocalist Karen Bergquist sings in the slow, melancholy opener "Latter Days." The album is full of the slower, heartfelt songs like "Latter Days" and "Poughkeepsie" and more up-tempo gems as "All I Need Is Everything" and the seductive "Faithfully Dangerous."

You will not regret this purchase. Over the Rhine will leave an indelible mark...

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer musical beauty, August 16, 1999
By
wobbit@bigfoot.com (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
The first song on "Good Dog Bad Dog" is the song that has managed to send shivers down my spine more than any other song I have ever heard. A fairly simple, mainly piano arrangement with strings as the song progresses, it posesses not only a melody line of rare beauty, but lyrics that change a song from being good, to hauntingly beautiful. If you don't hear and fall in love with "Latter Days", your musical wealth will be hugely depleted.

The album alternates between slow and medium paced songs, each one being a gem. There are a couple of songs mid way through that are out of character with the rest of album, but are still strangely entertaining!

If you like artists of the ilk of 10,000 Maniacs, The Innocence Mission and Aimee Mann, buy this album; you will fall in love with it!

there are only a few perfect albums i have ever heard, and besides emmylou harris's Wrecking Ball, this is the best ever.

just buy it- buy it for your friends, buy it for your loved ones. buy a bottle of red and some cheese, and a box of tissues.

Guardian of the Zen Sea "Indigo" (Looking after the sun and surf) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Good Dog Bad Dog: The Home Recordings (Audio CD)
This is a great CD that gets better and better over time! The music is sophisticated and elegant yet it matches the emotion of the lyrics. The lyrics are pure poetry. I have played this on my radio program in Interior Alaska, and always gets calls about the music--"Who did that great tune ! " I love the nane of the CD, too.
