4.0 out of 5 stars Effective, inexpensive floor lamp
I ordered this product from Amazon a few weeks ago to replace the old halogen torchiere lamp I had in the living room for more than a decade. 2.0 out of 5 stars Delicate assembly, great lighting
I bought 4 of these floor lamps, 2 black and 2 white. They provide excellent room lighting, using energy-efficient bulbs and are perfect for a room that has no other overhead lighting. The white ones were much trickier to assemble. There are four sections to be screwed together and they must be perfectly aligned or the threads cross. You cannot undo the connection without...

I ordered this product from Amazon a few weeks ago to replace the old halogen torchiere lamp I had in the living room for more than a decade. Even though I selected free shipping, the package arrived promptly and in perfect condition. It took about 15 minutes to unwrap and assemble by myself. The lamp parts were very carefully packed at the factory so everything inside, including the glass bowl, was in perfect shape. The light itself gives out a white glow rather than the hallogen's yellow glow I was used to, but it lighten's up the room just about the same while costing less to run. One thing, though, the lamp doesn't "warm up" immediately, you have to wait 2 or 3 seconds to get the full power, but that is not a problem for me, so I'm pretty much happy with my purchase. If you're just looking for a basic lamp to light up a room, this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fluorescent tourchiere lamp replaces older quartz lamp, July 14, 2008
This review is from: Good Earth Lighting GL6543-BK-GLI Lincoln Park Torchiere with Opal Glass Diffuser, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
Product works well, arrived on time, and is bright enough for reading and lighting the room. My wife wanted me to replace an older quartz tourchiere that was very hot. She was concerned about overheating and the possibility of fire. The flourescent lamp runs very cool, and puts out nearly an equivalent amount of light. Not to mention uses less electricity.

This lamp look and works great! I can not belive a lamp of this quality could be around fifty bucks. The shade is made of real glass and the light illuminates the whole room which is about 22 ft by 18 ft wide. The light also dimmer switch wich is pretty cool because you can make the room ligher or darker if you wish.

You cannot undo the connection without stripping the threads. The white ones didn't line up as well, seemed possibly lighter in substance than the black. I wondered if they were manufactured in a different factory. You also must be very careful in moving them around; they get out of line easily. If you are very careful in assembling, you'll have a good lamp at a low price. I love the style and they look great in my house.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap metal thread assembly nightmare easily destroyed, February 3, 2010

I bought two of these through Amazon. I was able to assemble one of them successfully. The other was a disaster.

The problem is the cheap metal and poor tooling (threads) characteristic of products made in China.

The lamp comes well packaged, and all the parts arrived intact. Assembly requires threading three tubes together (the bottom one into a base first) and then threading the bowl onto the topmost part of the tube. The wire runs through all of the parts, the base is heavy and the bowl is fragile, so the whole thing is awkward to assemble.

Of crucial importance is that the threads must be exactly (and I mean surgically) aligned in order for each part of the pole to be screwed into its mate. After exercising my broad command of Anglo-Saxon oaths, I was able to successfully assemble the first lamp. It provides a good, bright light, although there is about a one second delay before the bulb warms up and gives out light.

The second lamp ended up in the trash. In theory, I could have returned it. However, one of the joints was frozen, and another completely stripped, so I could not fully disassemble it and repack it, even with a plumber's wrench. I gave up, chalked it off once again to experience, and carted it off to the trash.

The bright side is that the Chinese Air Force will never equal ours. Parts problem!

1.0 out of 5 stars Returning for refund immediately!, March 27, 2010
This review is from: Good Earth Lighting GL6543-BK-GLI Lincoln Park Torchiere with Opal Glass Diffuser, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
This black floor lamp would have been perfect for my needs. Reading about the problems with the threads, I was VERY careful about assembly. I put a little lube on the threads so they would go on more smoothly. That helped. But one section had a male thread that had gotten bunged at the factory. There is no way that would have threaded together and it would have been very obvious if there had been any quality control. Anyway, I used a very fine file with a triangular cross-section. I smoothed away the burr on the thread and then I was able to screw it together easily. There was only a small section of one thread damaged, so it didn't really affect the integrity.

The real problem though is that the male thread insert on each section is swaged into the tube. I believe this insert is quite short and the swage can't take ANY force at all. I went to carry the assembled lamp up a set of stairs and tipped the assembled lamp at an angle. Even though I supported it carefully, the top section let go at the connection and tipped at an angle. You could snap it back in place, but there was no strength at all. While the threads are delicate and might be bunged up, it is the inserts that are the real problem. The threads never gave way after they were assembled.

If you decide to try one of these, I suggest you assemble this where it is to be used, keep everything vertical during assembly and only move the lamp by the base, still keeping everything vertical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great lamps!, December 1, 2007
By
Purchased 3 of these torchiere lamps for our office and couldn't be happier. Great quality with a strong sturdy base. The glass diffuser provides excellent light in our office and they also have a built in dimmer which I didn't even realize when I purchased, so that was a nice surprise. They are Energy Star rated which is great because we leave one on 24/7. The fluorescent bulbs are included which is also very nice. Everything arrived in good condition, but a little assembly was required.

5.0 out of 5 stars quality control problem resolved, January 4, 2009

This review is from: Good Earth Lighting GL6543-BK-GLI Lincoln Park Torchiere with Opal Glass Diffuser, Black (Tools & Home Improvement)
At the end of 2008 I returned this lamp to Amazon because of a manufacturing defect involving a cross-threaded fitting. The replacement they sent had the same problem, and Amazon would not send a third, but rather temporarily removed the lamp from their site pending the resolution of the quality issue.
I ordered this lamp again this spring as soon as it was relisted by Amazon, and the third time was indeed a charm. The lamp looks good, and provides a perfect variable range of indirect illumination for my computing area. Assembly is tricky working alone, and without care, you could be the one to produce the cross threading. But the combination of features, quality, and low price makes it worth the effort.
And Amazon's handling of the whole issue couldn't have been better. Postage on this item, heavy because of the lamp base, must be considerable, but with Amazon Prime that wasn't an issue.

...cuz you might scratch the frosted coating on the glass.

Besides that, what is there to say? this is a basic light, very good for cheaply adding nice illumination to any room.
